Exhausts and MOT's

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by rufty_tufty_hoolythug, Jul 7, 2009.

  1. Do exhausts need to be BS stamped to pass your MOT? Or is it that
they must not leak too much and not be excessively loud?

Don't have to be BS or E stamped, but mustn't be stamped 'off road use
only' or 'race use only' or anything like that (but if they are,
aluminium tape is your friend). Regardless of markings, they mustn't be
louder than what the tester would expect for the type of bike.

Or a dremel, with a polishing disc, which is what I've used on a
    couple of cans now.

In that case I shouldn't have a problem getting the Hardley MOT'd :).

The "not for road use" markings on the Triumph competition can are
about 2" square. It needed a "large" bit of aluminium tape.

If you rub at the tape, you'll be able to read the mark, so i'm not
sure that it's a good idea to MOT it with them on. The PITA is that I
have to remove the Givi pannier racks to get the Exhaust off.

Thanks Givi, you bunch of cunts.

Heh. Who here remembers the model of 'silencer' made by Dunstall,
aptly called the 'Decibel'? I had two of them on my first XS650, and
thy prompted a friend to call it "a real lout's bike".

Or a tester who supplies a roll of black insulating tape, looks at the
result and advises another layer as the engraving is still visible.

I thought you'd never had a loud aftermarket exhaust.

I had them on my 750 bonneville, silencer was somewhat of a misnomer.

I see you can still get 'Megaton' 'silencers'.

They were great but when they rotted a bit and shot out as if they
were guided missiles they damaged the garden shed and your parents got
a bit moody about it. Allegedly.

Reverse cone megas were the real hooligans friend on an XS650 but they
tended to deck a bit easily and the aluminium cones needed to be
removed and turned around to stop them ripping off completely.
    Allegedly.

I'm old enough to have played there too, but I preferred those BSA
copies that 'whistled' at idle. What were they called... were they
"Gold Stars" or summat? I had them on an ex police T160P back in the
'70's. I wonder where that is now?

I think I've said this before: our tester was advised by his doctor to
take life easy, relax, not to get too much excitement. So he watches his
porn with one eye shut, and takes the same approach to doing MOTs.

High level pipes and corrugated cardboard stuffed in your boots cured
    that.

I took the "not for road use" markings off the Ti cans I had for the
TRX using Autosol and a bit of elbow grease.
