I need to paint a *very* rusty, but solid, exhaust. What's the best
    stuff.

I have a tin of 'heat resistant' aluminium paint (made by Hammerite),
will that cope with silencer temperatures? I realise I'll be wasting my
    time with the header pipe.

Prefer silver colour, any recommendations? Must be cheap (<£10).

Years ago I did much the same, found some silver exhaust spray paint, can't
remember who made it but it came from a motor factors. Try calling one, I
think it's perfectly everyday stuff is that silver exhaust paint.

I've looked. All that seems to be available locally is engine paint, not
    exhaust.

I've used aerosol exhaust paint in the dim and distant past, it was shit
    and didn't last 5 minutes.

Both Sperex and Hycote do a VHT paint suitable for exhausts/headers, both
    available from motor factors.
The important thing is preparation, remove ALL rust with wire-wool/wet`n dry
etc then wipe over with thinners/trichloro or other paint prep solution.
Warm the aerosol can, warm the spray subject, then apply even coats.
VHT normally cures in use but sudden high temps can destroy the coating so a
few short rides to cure the paint is best rather than going out and caning
    the tits off it.

Halford's Very High Temperature Exhuast Paint - Matt Black. Works well
enough for a CB500, don't know if they do silver.

I used Motip on mine, heat resistant up to 650 C and has withstood 6
months of being on the FJ with no burning or peeling.
The website is www.motip.nl, but it doesn't seem to list any sales points
(well, it's listed, but not clickable...). Comes in a few colours; black,
light & dark anthracite, silver. Gives a 'satin' finish.
There's also a clear lacquer, but doesn't seem as good as the paint - the
finish has gone a bit funny :-\

I also painted the engine using VHT engine enamel, gloss black, very good
    stuff.

  10. Tried and tested - B&Q BBQ paint. Slight sheen to the finish you don't
get with exhaust paints, and only around 4 quid a can. Covers more area
    as well.
