    Hi All

Wonder if anyone can enlighten me, I have bought a 1996 Suzuki Bandit 600N
and it has a carbon silencer fitted, I have also been given the original
Suzuki stainless silencer with the bike.

So, I was wondering why people fit non-standard exhausts, is it purely for
the sound or does it increase performance and should the bike be tuned to
    suit a non-standard exhaust.

Don't get me wrong it sounds lovely with the carbon one, was just wondering
if it was detrimental to the engine fitting these ?

    Regards, David

You will find that the (carbon) replacement exhaust is considerably
lighter, probably much more free-flowing and almost inevitably noisier
than the standard can. This means that there is less resistance to
the engine when trying to get rid of exhaust gases, which (up to a
    point) is a Good Thing.

The additional noise is largely a matter of personal taste, but there
is a considerable body of (largely anecdotal) evidence to show that
Loud Pipes Save Lives. In the urban environment, pedestrians can hear
you coming, even if they don't see you (or even look ;-)) and are so
less likely to step off the pavement under your front wheel. When
filtering in or out of town, car drivers can hear you coming and are
more likely to look in their mirrors and spot you - sometimes they'll
even move out of your way. Better for you, better for them. A
win-win situation, and you don't see many of them, do you?

My SO replaced the original can on her CBR600FS with an Akrapovic
item. Her father disapproved gently (he being a motor engineer of
many years experience) and could not understand why she wanted to fit
    it.

After a few weeks, we could draw the following conclusions: the
Akrapovic flows much better, giving an improved throttle response and
making the power delivery much smoother(1); there are no signs of
fuelling problems; the fuel consumption has _improved_ by at least 20%
    overall.

Additionally, it looks better, is about 20% of the original's weight
and it sounds sublime, yielding a deep and fruity "thrum" which is
much more pleasant than the (not unpleasant) original.

Dad is convinced, which is well good enough for me.

What you want to do, once you are accustomed to how the bike sounds
and feels, is swap back to the original. Check the differences for a
week or so, then swap back. Then you can take your pick on a much
    better informed basis.

    1. Taking the "emissions test dip" around 5K rpm out almost
    completely.

Many thanks for the information particularly your comments about the exhaust
volume making other road users aware of you presence... seems to make good
    sense.

After replacing the original boat anchor fitted as the standard exhaust by
Aprilia on my RSV and replacing it with an Akrapovic slip on, I've also had
a significant improvement in fuel consumption, plus a similar 'filling in'
of the dip at 5000 rpm.

Since then I'v gone up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket (gearbox sprocket
already down to 16 teeth from the original 17) which has gone some way to
reducing the mpg but at least it sounds nice!
