    I see you have a 520 (didn't u used to have a golf gti I think?).
Anyway, whats the bmw like? which year/shape? Is a 2 litre engine
powerfull enough to move it with ease?

Reason I ask is im contemplating changing car in the next 6 mths, the
92-96 shape 5series bekons... also like the newer shape one, but a tad
expensive at the mo (and less well built apparently).

Are your comments on my sig intended to hijack Oldbloke's thread
    and make him jealous?

I did have a GTi, but it got to be too old, too many things
wrong it with MoT coming up, and I had to pass it on. I ebayed
    it
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=
    4554195786&ssPageName=STRK:MESO:IT
to a guy who bought it without seeing it, and is in the business
of doing up and selling on old Golfs.
    1990G, what's known as the E34 shape.
When it gets going, yes. Below 4000rpm it's got less go than the
Golf, above 4000rpm it starts to get interesting. A lot of that,
of course, is because it's much heavier. A to B, it's some what
faster, but I'm still learning, after 10 years in the Golf and 4
weeks in the Beemer, how to drive it properly. MPG is
    significantly lower at the moment.
That's much in line with what I've heard.

I reckon a late E34 model, 1995 or 1996, can be a lot of car for
    the money. I think I'd go for a 525 rather than a 520. Fuel
consumption is similar, but the 525 has more go.

I'm mulling over the idea of switching to a newer 525 when funds
    permit. Something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=
    4556944146&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

If you compare it with this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=
    4555520692&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
the older one looks good value.

FWIW I got an insurance refund of about 20GBP on transferring
from the GTi to the 520. If I'd got a 525, the insurance would
have been the same as the Golf.

    For info, see this site:
    http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw.html

TRX tyres (see unixnerd site) are a PITA, and can lead to these
cars dropping in price, but I've just scored a set of 15-inch
tyres and wheels off Ebay for 71GBP inc delivery. <8)

Nikasil engines (see unixnerd site) are an issue to watch out
for, but IIRC only for bigger/later E34s.

Have emailed R & T, and got a very prompt response.

Seems very reasonable for a spot of dyno-ing, so have emailed them back for
    availability.

Many thanks for the recommendation, will let you know what happens.
