Exhaust deflector question

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Andrew Szafran, Oct 10, 2004.

  1. I have a Nighthawk 550 with saddlebags on the back and a stock exhaust
system. Unfortunately, the mufflers only reach to around the halfway
point on the rear axle, which means that they end below the saddlebags.
When the bike is idling at a light, the exhaust somehow goes up and around
the bags, and I can smell it (yes, the problem has to do with the bags,
because I can't smell exhaust with them removed).

The mufflers appear to be clamped onto the downpipes rather than being a
unit with them. Can I fit aftermarket longer mufflers without messing up
the carb tuning and losing power? What brand of aftermarket stuff would
    y'all recommend?

The other solution would be to fit extensions to the end of the existing
mufflers, or extend the downpipes a few inches using exhaust tubing and
move the mufflers back. Would that be possible or advisable?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

What is in the saddle bags that you need to have with you all the time?
Remove the bags when you do not need them. Would a tank bag do as well?
