Righto, Ill be getting a bike again in a month or two along with a set
of new gear, but I'd much rather lose a few dress sizes before I splurge
money on something. Any suggestions on something for the home?

Right now I have a pnumatic stepper thing and a pair of 5kg weights. Any
recommendations on something which will help shed the pounds? The
stepper is ok, but I get the feeling that its more for building up the
legs rather an aerobic fat burning as my legs give way long before im
actually tired. ie im not really hot or sweating much. I can do ~1000
steps in about 20 minutes. If it makes any difference, Im 6'3" and
    110kilos. I don't particularly look fat but I wouldn't go swimming in
    public.

You can put it into kilos if you like, to make you sound lighter, but you
and I both know that 110 kilos is 17 stone 4 pounds.

I [1] managed to lose 1/2 stone by trying to run a mile as quickly as I
could. I got from over 12 mins, to 8.04 in less than a month.

Having said that, Christmas got in the way, and I've not run since just
before and I'm now about 1/2 stone heavier. Every time I stuff those pies in
my face, I think about trying again.

    [1] 6 foot and 104 kilos [2]
    [2] 16st 4lbs to you and me

Mind you my weight hasn't really changed (since the initial 5 stone loss)
    but my size has IYKWIM.

Not if you pedal up a big hill - you can't defy gravity. I live opposite a
nice 1000 foot high hill, pedalling up that requires something over a MJ
(assuming I am about 25% efficient at converting the energy from food into
gravitational potential energy). I have calculated that I use at least
300Calories pedalling up the sodding thing.

Running when you're so heavy could be dangerous - cycling is lower stress
because you can't get impact injuries (unless you fall off).

I work on a strange mix of metric and imperial. I do metric weights and
volumes and imperial distances. I;m sure theres a cracking joke in there
somewhere about me liking a few inches.

Well this is the main reason I was looking at getting rid of some of the
bulk before inflicting my flabby arse onto the public.

Just went shopping for a suit, 50 inch chest and 44 waist "sorry sir we
    don't do those sizes"

    Bugger.

That's only the lack of Lycra.

I agree though; there's no more unedifying sight than a fat wobbling
50-yr-old pounding the pavement, tits bouncing akimbo.

I've been cycling today and I can assure you that no lycra was
involved. I was surprised to find that cyclists do an equivilent to
the nodding thing of some bikers. they mumble 'awright' as they fly
    past. Most disconcerting.
