Even Though I Know the Answer...

  1. ....I have to ask...

How fucking stupid can people be?!?

A few days ago, Shells posted a link to an online auction Grays were having
to get rid of some repo/demo bikes & scooters.

A 2002 Aprilia RSV demo looks set to go for <<$20K, thus making it a
reasonably good score, but out of my league by an order of magnitude or so,
so I set my sights a little lower, specifically at

    http://www.graysonline.com.au/lot.asp?LOT_ID=134498

'95 ZX6 with some km's under its belt and, according to the pre-purchase
report and some snaps Grays staff are only too happy to provide, scuff
damage down the rhs, rooted tyres, chain and steering-head bearings, pitted
forks, and, to quote, "signs of neglect".

Some moon unit in San Remo, imaginably dazzled by the heat shimmer hovering
above the Phillip Island tarmac, has pushed its price out to the threshold
of $3,000... before the 6% buyer's premium kicks in and before he's paid
upwards of $200 to have a bike needing $500 in (acknowledged) consumables
    shipped down to him...

Wonder if he'd be interested in a really quik R6?

  4. If you look through those bids, and put some two and twos together, you
should be able to work it out... :)

Actually, I went $100 above what I'd originally set as my ceiling.
eight years old, >50,000km, no loud pipe or luggage rack... in top-notch
condition, with rego, it's worth $4000 at a stretch. Thus, unregistered,
crashed (however gently) needing tyres and considerable other work, plus
factor in that you're buying a cat in a bag (it's a repo, too) which you'll
have to pay to get shipped down to you_and_pay a buyer's premium on...

Even if this guy gets it for that $2909, he's up for $175 buyer's premium
and $200 shipping (and that's being generous; he's not even in metro
    Melbourne); that's $3284.

Then add $50 for steering head bearings, $300 for tyres and $100 for a chain
(put the pitted forks into the too-hard basket for the moment); rounding
    down, that's ~$3700.

What's rego in Victoria, ~$500? He does that, and he's got a bike for
$4200... and that's assuming the thing doesn't start sounding like one of
those portable cement mixers when he first thumbs the starter.

Bikes bought at auctions should go for the price they'd fetch if the motor
was a solid lump of metal...

Depends on the auction house. Some auction houses will let you start a
vehicle first. (Start only, not actually move, so the gearbox could still be
    shagged.)

  11. I sold 2ndhand 'puters through the Trading Post back in the day... so, yes I
faken do. And however many people phoned me afterwards to say, "I pushed the
button on the front of the tv, and the computer's not starting", none of
them paid me an inflated sum of money from 800km away.

(it's gone up another $100 overnight)

  14. Well, they'll _let_ you, you'd just need _really_ long arms to reach the
    starter button...

  16. That would've made it a $3500 bike with a year's rego and new tyres, chain
and sh bearing. Still plenty of scope there for a $500 profit.

Like I said, I let myself go $100 above my ceiling...
