Errr, is my bike restricted?

  1. I've just taken delivery of a new (to me) CBR1000 and after a quick blat
thought I should check the paperwork. It was registered in this country in
August of this year and it was imported from Italy by the looks of the
    relevant papers.

I know some machines are restricted in certain EU countries but my fear is
that this one is, too. Is Italy one of those countries that restricts it's
bikes to 100 bhp (or whatever the limit is)? I guess I should have checked
this out but I never was very good at waiting for something (

  3. There won't be. It's a lardy old tourer. They were good for about 160 on
    a fine day.

It's just a small point, but next time you might find it instructive to
examine the paperwork *before* you do the deal, not after.

I'm always amazed how few people bother checking logbooks, because *all*
the vital info you need to know is there, except for whether it's been
in a smash or is still under finance.

I really had no idea but if I had to hazard an uninformed guess, I'd say no.
France and Germany came to mind for me too. I wondered about the restriction
because, although the midrange is awsome, there doesn't appear to be much of
    a top end rush.

It is bloody good, tho. It really is in very good condition, goes like stink
and even the looks have grown on me ;-)

  5. Oh. A bit disappointing but someone a few days back said don't expect it to
be a Blade on the cheap.
Yeees, I *know that now*! ;-)

Still, that's something else I'll remember when the next one comes along.
Oh, arse. I never checked that either but being foreign I don't suppose that
information would follow the bike over here. I mentioned before that the
bike was registered in August. Well, that was when the application was made,
it actually got a British plate less than a month ago :)

It's all a learning experience. I've known car dealers with 25 years
experience buy a cut and shut. (I know this to be true because I saw it on
    "deals on wheels") ;-)

After they started making bikes that were capable of over 100bhp? Oops,
    sorry. ;-)

  7. It was manufactured in May 1990, I don't know what this means as the V5
is on it's way to Swansea.

That means that Hodna made it in May 1990 and I can't see what the V5
has to do with it anyway as it is only the rego doc.

  9. Hodna?

It means that bhp levels were changed between models and I don't know
which model mine is as the V5 is on it's way to Swansea.

  10. It makes no real difference: they all produced roughly the same bhp -
it's not as if they suddenly upgraded the engine and made one amazingly
quick - and they're all nice big lardy old buses.

I've now had a *real good look* at the documents that came with this
bike. My Italian isn't great but from interpretation and an online
translatore I got the gist. There's just one thing I'm still not sure
of, and if it's what I fear I suspect I've been done.

I've got a copy of the original factory receipt and all previous owners.
In amongst the dimensions, weight etc, there are a few lines under
    "Motore" that look like this:

    tipo - SC09E
    tempi/comb. - 4/ BENZ
    cilindri - 04
    cilindrata cm3 - 998
    pot. max kW - 98,00
    tipo potenza
    girl/ min.
    pot. fiscale CV - 12

It's the pot. max kW that worries me, at 98 kW it's *way* short of what
it should be and would go a long way to explaining why I felt it was so
slow. So, now I know this bugger *is* restricted WTF do I go about
    liberating the full power?

And just for fun, I don't suppose it will be cheap either.

To convert Kilowatts to HP, multiply by 1.34. Handily, I've just done this
for you and came up with 131.32 HP.
How many HP or kW do you think you are missing?

It's not fucked at all, it just feels *too* smooth. I'm very relieved to
hear the kW - bhp conversion!

I guess I thought the thing would scare the living shit out of me but
it's actually got very good manners and is a pleasure to ride. SWMBO
said that "when you overtook those cars I slid down the seat and nearly
    came off".

    Thanks man ;-)

I thought I was missing at least 30 HP. I'm very happy that, although I
thought I'd get my arms ripped off, I got what I paid for.

The kW to HP formula is a handy one and one I shall be using in the
    future. Cheers!

CBR thou rip your arms off, narr they can spend all day at silly speeds
    though.

    <thinks>

You're not planning on despatching on it are you?

I can believe it. I was sitting behind two cars at 45 mph on Sunday and
overtook them on a straight bit. When I pulled in I looked at the speedo
and that's when I saw I was doing slightly more than triple figures.
    Naughty but nice ;-)
I did consider it and I wanted to but after some thought I think not. It
wouldn't take long to get used to muscling round London but frankly,
even though it's no spring chicken it's in such good nick I wouldn't
want to put her through it.
