Or can handle the bike. But speed isn't everything.
For some reason the GSX R100 doesn't seem to be as much as a fashion
item as the R1 and generally people who own them can ride fairly well.

Is that the learner friendly version? A sort of an NSR/RS125/Mito for
    Gixxer wannabes?

Y'know, I hadn't thought about it, but that seems to be the case.

Mind you, the people on here that I know that have owned R1s (you,
Ash, Ade, Bear) can all ride too.

Mebbe the "R1 power ranger" thing is just a self-sustaining myth, like
the "volvo drivers are crap" thing.

One thing I noticed from the young, streetwise black guys who sometimes
frequented my shop in Harrow, was that owning an R1 or R6 - even if you
didn't have a licence for it - was considered cooler than owning a gun of
some sort. None of them could ride for toffees, but the bikes looked
rather good with those rather nice scrape thingies down the sides, worn
    like properly earned battle scars.

    well.

I could be that the R1 was the bike to at the time and people just
noticed them more. After all who would notice a crap rider on a GS500?

But Yamaha are *still* doing R1/R6 0% finance deals atm, so
    that's attracting people...

I'm not having a pop here - but as you are probably the leading
exponent of the "people in vehicle type x drive like y" world view,
it's hardly surprising that you "see" lots of R1s being ridden badly.

heh. Well, I did consider using "with respect", but that has become
such common shorthand for "I have no respect for you whatever" that I
thought I'd best not. But seriously, I *wasn't* having a pop at Bear
on this occasion - it was meant to genuine comment.

never been to either of those fine places, but I spend a fair amount
of time riding through Edmonton, Tottenham, Stamford Hill and Stoke
    Newington.

To be honest, 99% of riding that I see I neither categorise as 'good'
or 'bad'. It's just someone on a bike. Can't remember the last time
I consciously thought "that bloke crap".

Bored with this row now - got any ideas for a new one?

I think you're only saying that because you don't know Edmonton Green.

  19. This week in Cambridge, I have seen drivers being shit in Citroen
Xantias, Vauxhall Bedfords, Renault Picassos, and VW Golfs.

"Drivers who are shit" drive whatever they are driving shit.

Think of Stoke Newington. Now imagine a place /like/ SN, but without
it's olde-worlde charm, trendy pubs, 1/2-decent restaurants and
without the local's perfectly-mannered driving habits. Now imaging
this place with a disgusting shopping centre/leisure complex stuck in
the middle of it. That'd be Edmonton Green.
