I'm not claiming any specialised knowledge but all the stuff I've read
(including the autobiog of a test pilot) said that for the time it was
a brilliant aircraft and was only cancelled due to the actions of the
Labour gibberment and specifically Tony Benn. BICBW. I agree it would
    be shite now.

  7. I presume the seller means combat radius, which would be more like half
    that.

  8. Yep. Cost a fucking bomb and there were the fucking Yanks to consider.
We simply couldn't afford it, no matter what shenanigans Wilson/ Moscow
/Washington were up to at the time, given the country was going down the
    economic shitter.
Most things of the 60s would be shite now.

Nah, we don't have such fancy stuff in Crete. I only read about the strikes
in the paper and then simply noticed that there was no commentary in the
Champions League games on TV. I work outside the city centre and therefore
was pretty much oblivious of the whole issue. I'm flying to Athens today
though, I hope services are running again.

True but if you look at the service life of some stuff that the RAF is
still flying or has only just come out of service eg. the Jaguar which
was a 60s design, then it could have been a contender.

We couldn't afford to make it so developing it was a waste of tax
    payers money.

Anyway, I base my view that it would never have been any good on
stories I was told about when it was being tested but that doesn't
really make it different to a lot of other British built aircraft.

The gennies weren't designed to use it as most of them pre-dated the jet
age, but they were over-engineered and we didn't care.

We also run a Bedford 3.5 ton wireless[1] truck on 50:50 Diesel and Avtur,
    with no problems.

[1] Wireless as in HF radio with a 40' mast, not Bluetooth.

The AEW Nimrod development that was co-managed by BAE Systems and Marconi
    Avionics.

The mission requirements meant is had to loiter with only two engines
running to save fuel, while the power requirements for the radar (the whole
point of it be up there) needed all four engine generators running.

I was the first one to notice the problem and it took a fortnight of
meetings between the three parties (BAE, MAS and the MOD) before they agreed
that they were in the shit. BAE were then made "primary contractor" and
told to sort it out. I could see the writing on the wall and left MAS to go
do commercial computing for Shell, and 4 months later the Nimrod project was
    cancelled. "A very British cock-up".

Ah right, so just pissed for no good reason then?
Not bothered with the Metro today so don't know Guv. It's hard to tell
if the roads are anymore chaotic. As long as the airport is running
when it's time to depart IDGAF.

    70s, yes?

I've spent enough time on military work to know that they never reach
completion within budget and they're never anywhere near being
    finished when they should be.

People moan about the Olympics going over budget but that's **** all
compared to the way the MoD waste money.
Similar cash cows have paid for my toys on numerous occasions in the
past and long may they continue to do so.
