ER5 Bits anyone?

    Greetings

Having left it sitting in the garage for the last 6 months after some
old bastard ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H elderly gentleman t-boned me, I've decided
that I need to look at rebuilding my ER5.

I know that need (at least) four indicators, two mirrors, headlight and
a speedo/tacho unit. The dents and scrapes I can put up with.

I'm getting figures thrown around like $600 - $700 for parts. Around $50
for after market indicators and anything between $200 and $300 for the
    speedo / tacho unit complete.

Anyone got any suggestions (other than taxidermy or the application of
fire)? I'm loath to spend $700+ on a bike I bought for $1500 but it's
too good to chuck out (and I'm too broke to buy a new one).

I'm thinking of trying to find some LED indicators and headlights from
someone like Australian Street Fighters and an electronic speedo and
    tacho from whoknowswhere.

    Suggestions? Ideas?

    Ta

Bicycle speedo will sort out the speedo issue - circa $100.
Aftermarket el cheapo tacho from SuperCheapAuto circa $40 - you may
have to make up a new bracket. Second hand blinkers from the wreckers
should be cheaper than aftermarket LED, note also that LED one's may
need a little bit of electrickery to make them work (don't draw enough
current to make the blinker relay blink)

ER5 probably shares blinkers with others in the Kwaka range - or you
might be able to shoehorn something on there - if they're the standard
screw in style ones you can probably source them from any number of
jap bikes at the wreckers if you don't mind a shape mismatch (or
    replace the lot)

  3. The ER-5 uses the same indicators as a lot of other Kawasakis;
however, does each of the indicator bulb wires have its own bullet-
type brass connector, or is there a plastic clip-in connector for
both? The former limits you to pilfering indicators from pre-2000
Kawasakis, the latter to post-2000. Either way, imperfect indicators
shouldn't cost more than $10 each from a wrecker.

Headlight; anything round and of approximately the correct size will
    do.

Mirrors; anything with the correct thread diameter and pitch to screw
into the clutch perch and front master cylinder.

The instruments, though, you don't have many alternatives unless you
want to just live with a bicycle speedo attached to the top triple
    clamp with Blu-Tac.

Speedo - If you can't get anything from a wrecker use a Sigma brand
(they are the ones that can cope with motorcycle speeds) bicycle speedo.
Lighting it is your problem, but you could put it inside the speedo shell.
You can buy ones with battery lights you'd have to fiddle with replacement
    batteries though.

tacho - again, check wreckers. Else you do without, or get a VDO one
from an auto instrument electrician who can advise you on what
changes it might need to fit your firing pattern.

headlight - if it's a standard round one, or a round one can fit, then
go to any wrecker who has older bikes and get one. If it's just the
lens then repco should have inserts to fit. If it's not a standard
one then if the bike's unfaired buy a standard on! If it's faired
    then keep trying wreckers.

indicators - any wrecker with older bikes. Just get 4 that look
    sorta like each other.

  6. LED indicators are easy to install, just add some 10w resistors across the
    leads
experiment with a few even if they are low wattage till you get the right
    flash rate

I installed two truck side clearance lamps and think I used

hang on, I'll go and have a look
I did a temp job on it six months ago and used 2 x 10W X 4.7 ohms
haven't got a round tuit yet to finish it
But I reckon that 1 X 10W X 2.5 ohm would do it for each indicator.

You can get these from Jaycar for about 30 cents each, a lot less than what
you have to pay from an auto supply store like Auto Barn or Supercheap at
    about $9 each

It's a (implied) backspace character. It's a geek joke type of thing
going back to "the old days" of computers.

No such thing as a stupid question - only stupid people that don't ask
    questions :)

    <insert puzzled look here>

I'm not with you Theo. Big W are selling blinking electronic cans for $9?

    More info please.

    <Thinking: Won't the beer short-circuit the electronics?)

As Nigel said it's a joke, but basically the backspace character was
CTRL-H on some systems. ^H says 'ctrl h'. I think you'll also find ASCII
"character" 7 is actually for : Backspace.

  14. The beer's just transport packaging, Nigel, you're supposed to drink it.
Before fitting the cans, that is.

Mister Ohm says that if you put 13 volts across 2.5 ohms you draw about 5
amps (and 65W) per indicator and some of your wiring will start getting a
bit warm! (not to mention your indicator switch contacts).
A standard indicator bulb is either 10W or 21W so that equates to either 15
ohms or 7 ohms and, of course, 10W or 21W.

Nah mate, 'cans' is an americanism. Here in Australia, we
    call 'em 'boobs'.
