I am in the process of molishing my pillion seat to take a Givi top box. Having removed the foam, the plastic 'frame' is actually dished. For a variety of plastic related reasons, I need to raise the mounting plate about 15-20mm above the level of the frame (to allow the rear of the box to clear the rear plastic of the bike). I can used some mdf or similar for that bit, but the bolts from the mounting plate actually have to go through a section of the dished part of the frame, so there is some 10mm between the plate and the frame. Not ideal I think although it does seem pretty strong. To make it a better mount, it seems that I could fill the 'dish' with something like epoxy to create a flat, solid base for the plate and 'spacers' Thing is I need about a litre of the stuff. From B+Q that is gonna cost So suggestions for suppliers, or alternatives? Maybe Isopon or similar would do as well? I wouldn't use any kind of automotive filler, they're likely to crack if you drill a hole through them and bolt something through them.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Catman It's also going to get pretty hot whilst it's curing, if you try to do it all in one go. I'm not sure I have any better suggestions, TBH. If you do decide to go this route, have a chat with your local friendly model shop, they stock pouring epoxy in reasonable quantities. -- Wicked Uncle Nigel - Podium Placed Ducati Race Engineer as featured in Performance Bikes and Fast Bikes WS* GHPOTHUF#24 APOSTLE#14 DLC#1 COFF#20 BOTAFOT#150 HYPO#0(KoTL) IbW#41 SBS#39 OMF#6 Enfield 500 Curry House Racer "The Basmati Rice Burner", Honda GL1000K2 (On its hols) Kawasaki ZN1300 Voyager "Oh, Oh, It's so big" Suzuki TS250 "The Africa Single" Yamaha Vmax Honda ST1100 wiv trailer

Catman says... Fill it with expanding builder's foam, shape it so the top is flat and then a skim of fibreglass over the top to hold everything together and make it paintable.
A Nordwest owner who made his own custom twin headlamp nose fairing reckoned Holts Bumper Repair was v. good for drilling and shaping after curing. I have found it useful myself to repair a seat mount on the GFR. TBF that involved 'gluing' a pre-drilled plastic bobbin in to place though. Also v. expensive. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
Epoxy seems to be £20 or so per litre. Plenty of chandlers have it or mail order suppliers such as http://www.cfsnet.co.uk . You need some filler and glass mat to reduce weight and increase strength, or think of a different solution.
I had considered the foam, but the fibreglass had escaped me. I like that idea, been a long time since I did any 'laying up'... How about foam filler with a layer of epoxy over the top? -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l (Really) Sprint 1.7 75 TS 156 TS S2 Triumph Speed Triple: Black with extra black bits www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Catman says... Looking over the other replies, I'd bolt some pre-drilled bobbins in place before filling with the foam to give something solid for the box to bolt through that won't deform.
Cheapest option would be cement. Seriously. If you mix in fibreglass strands it'll be strong and cost next to nothing. Polyfilla would do, too. If you really want to go lightweight, do the Loz thing.
I think that may well be the best option. I've just measured the void. It's actually less than 0.75l so I shall consider my options. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l (Really) Sprint 1.7 75 TS 156 TS S2 Triumph Speed Triple: Black with extra black bits www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Or you could use a fibre filled filler wot's full of glass figres. Works just like normal body filler, but it won't crack and split when you drill it. Price is around a tenner for a gallon can from your friendly neighbourhood car body supplier. (Brown Bro's, Supertune, whoever) -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19

Then you can scoop the mess out with a trowel. Fibregalss resin will eat the foam for fun. You need Polyester resin. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
