  4. I now consider myself to be semi-retired. We all get overtaken by those
    younger than us.

  5. Now *you* are not allowed to go all glum and grumpy about your age.
It's getting a bit tedious you know. Especially given how you keep
whizzing off to have nice holidays. do fun things you enjoy and then
turn a job disaster into a positive career move with a big pay increase.

There are far more deserving people who have a right to be glum on here!
    ;-)

My lovely HP printer/scanner/copier has gone tits up just 3 weeks after
fitting new cartridges - The fucker. The PC won't recognise that it's
there, even though I've reinstalled the software a million times.

Sadly not. Galvanising embrittles spring steel

  11. The stuff I tried was pretty useless. It amounted to aluminium paint,
but with powdered zinc instead of ally. Mind you, it might have improved
    since the '70s.
Galvanising is dead easy. Just passing a current from a zinc anode to
the (clean) steel pins through an electrolyte would do it.

I'd guess that zinc chloride would make a good electrolyte, and the
lower the potential difference between electrodes, the finer and more
regular (but slower) will be the coating.

I used to copper plate things in a similar way, and used what they now
    call a 'D' cell.

  12. Copper plating wouldn't.

Of course, you could always get them Diamond-Hard Chromed. That doesn't
temper springs further, and dhc is much less porous than even heavy
    chrome.

Indeed I am although you note I mentioned stress. I'm allowed to.
