engine oil - what type to use

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Peter Cremasco, Jun 14, 2005.

  1. Just extracted this from the FJR service manual, in regards to what
types of oil to use on the wet clutch.

    • Engine oil also lubricates the clutch and
the wrong oil types or additives could
cause clutch slippage. Therefore, do not
add any chemical additives or use engine
oils with a grade of CD or higher and
do not use oils labeled “ENERGY CON-
    SERVING II” d or higher.

Nothing new there Peter... friction modifiers have also been a nono on
wet clutch motors. Doesn't make any difference on dry clutch bikes...

  3. I knew the bit about friction modifiers, and also new that it was
irrelevant as far as dry clutches go. But there has always been some
debate as to how 'good' a conventional oil has to get before it is no
longer suitable for wet clutches. FJR manual states no greater than CD
grade, and Castrol has advised no greater than SG grade.

It was my understanding that CD grade requires friction modifiers (or
    equivilent).

  5. Ahh. I didn't realise that, but that would explain why it's recommended
not to use it in wet clutches.
