So where do people hide engine numbers? I went to look at a XJ600N
yesterday. I tried to find the engine number but couldn't see it anywhere.
The only numbers I could see didn't match the numbers on the V5 at all, as
in they were wildly different which made me wonder if I was looking in the
    right place.

    Rusted and ropy.
    Dog-eared old copy.
    Vintage and classic,
    or just plain Jurassic:
    all words to describe me.

  2. Could be stamped into the cases on top of or near the clutch. Failing
that, have a look down on the vertical surface near the gear lever.

If the numbers are wildly different from those on the V5, run away.

  4. Quite sensible really.
I had a bod quote a car engine number to me as "FO 1342".

I looked at those and they were nothing like the V5 numbers.
And so I did. SWMBO was chatting to the guy whilst I took it for a test run
and he seemed to be a bit of an arsehole anyway. He told her he normally
managed to wreck bikes before he sold them and he wanted to get rid of this
one before that happened, so god knows what sort of abuse he'd given it.

  6. Translation: "I want to move it on pronto because it's got a hookey
    engine in it."
