Engine mount probs - wisdom sought

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Dave Milligan, Aug 20, 2006.

  1. Decided some Oggy Knobs for our bikes would be a good idea. Purchased
the DIY kits for both bikes and got myself emotionally prepared to get
    the wee fingers dirty.

On the Z750 I undid the RHS engine mount bolt and placed the Oggy Knob
in place and screwed in the new bolt (designed to go with the extra
length need for Oggy Knobs) and made sure the nut on the far (inside)
end was secure, tightened it all up to a guesswork torque setting.

LHS - indid the original engine mount bolt and put the Oggy Knob in
place and put the new longer bolt in place to discover it don't go
    right in.
Gets torch to peer in engine mount hole and wey ho. The bloody holes
    don't line up.

They must have lined up when the original engine mount bolt was in
place, so the bloody engine has moved slightly when I took out the
    bolt. Bugger.

Gets trolley jack to lift engine to the correct place, and Yes it did
lift it but now it needs to go slightly forward to line the holes up.

And this is where it gets difficult. I can't move it forward.

Will the experts please step forward and give me a clue...cos right
now I'm bereft of ideas other than to take it to a bike shop tomorrow.

    Kind regards

Don't tighten the other side until you get both bolts in then progressively
    torque up both.

    snip
Loosened the RHS bolt and jacked up the engine, but it didn't make
    much difference TBH.

In frustration I jammed the LHS bolt in and screwed it in with a fair
bit of force and kept on screwing (obviously this had the effect of
moving the two holes closer to alignment) until I could feel the end
of the bolt emerging on the other side of the engine mount where the
nut was supposed to be. Placed the nut and continued screwing the
    bolt.

As soon as the bolt engaged the nut thread it moved in quicker and
tightened OK. Didn't use a torque wrench cos I don't have one, but
both sides are done up tight and more or less equally.

The ZRX was much easier cos the bolts and mounts were so much easier
    to get at.

Then I put the Akropovic pipe on the ZRX. It's been in the packet for
18 months and I've finally found the time to bung it on. Termorrer
I'll be off for a ride and the first stop will be the local bike shop
to get my work checked out.

Took me nearly 3 hours for all that. Don't think I'll apply for an
    adult apprenticeship in bike mechanics.

    Thanks for the help.

    Kind regards

  5. Might be a good idea to loosen all Eng. mounting bolts first.
Then use the "podger" or large pin punch or as a last resort a screwdriver
if required to allign the bolt holes
fit all the Oggy Knobs then tighten the bolts.
Be aware that there may be a tightening pattern to follow when retightening
    the Eng. mount bolts
