engine missing and farting at idle sporadically.

It's weird, and it came out of nowhere, the bike (EL250) is starting to miss and
generally just die at idle once she's been taken 75% up to operating temperature[1].
However once she's been taken for a few k's run, the idle seems to sort itself out,
and it purrs, however if you kill the ignition for any reason, even for 2 seconds, and
you go and restart her again, the missing and farting symptoms returm.

Im guessing something with the carbs, anyone have any clue? aside from
"take them apart an cleam em the hell out" which is a last resort as i'd honestly
like to spend as little time fucking about with te bike and just get her sorted
as aside from that she's a perfect bike and i just wanna sell her. :)

    yeah, sure, I'd ...
.... okay, never mind. But it's not really possible to fix
    carbs without taking them apart!

Ah keep talkin Sharkey, i was figuring it may come down to a cleanout being required,
If i was wanting to keep the bike, i'd say "no worries, what do i do?", but i've just sunk about 1200
in repairs into the sucker in 2 months, and decided that although she oughta be hell reliable now
enough's enough. I'm just after a clue is all (im suspecting i may just offload the bike on a dealer

have you considered running a can of injector cleaner through it on a
low tank , works normally on a carby car.
or maybe something to clean the crap from the tank in use..

I have got carby cleaner in the current tank, i was pondering pouring in about 100ml of metho to
absorb the water and then filling the tank up and then going on a scenic tour of sydney for the hell
of it this afternoon. :). Hopefully that does a wonder or two.

and yeah, nev's right, that bike's got a voodoo curse, what with me cussing the bike on here enough

I've used the Nulon 'total fuel system cleaner on my bikes before with no
problems etc. This is aimed more at the total system and more at carbys
rather than just injectors. A bit more, but hey, you don't need much on a
bike considering the stuff is designed to go into a tank with 30 - 60
    litres!

It's not a difficult job, just fiddly. Carbs have lots of
little brass widgets with teeny holes which attract dirt like
    buried cables attract backhoes.

Before you start, clean your workbench, getting rid of
swarf, sawdust, etc, and making sure you've got enough
room to lay the pieces out.

Drain float bowls. Remove carbs. If they're filthy, clean
the outside off with kero and a toothbrush. Remove float
bowls. Remove jets. Remove the floats and make sure they're
not leaking, check the needle valve (which regulates fuel into
the float bowl) and make sure it isn't 'ridged'.

Clean jets and emulsion tubes (the brass widgets) with carb
cleaner (pong!) and compressed air (ping! where'd the fucking
thing go?) or as a last resort a stiff _plastic_ bristle from
a brush. Wipe the red powdery shit out of the bottom of the
float bowls with a clean bit of rag. Replace jets.

For CV (diaphragm) carbs, Remove the top cover and check that
the diaphragm isn't holed or torn, and that the slide moves
    smoothly and doesn't 'hang up'.

    Reassemble.

All up it should take a couple of hours to do it thoroughly.
And it can make an amazing difference to a bike's fettling.

For more info, there's a Haynes book just about bike carbs.

Oh, yes, that first. If the drain outlets are somewhere
really stupid and don't have pipes on them, buy a bit of
clear hose from Mitre 10 and use that to drain the fuel
    into something.
I tell you what, Mike, never mind the whole clean benchtop thing,
just park it at the bottom of Reefton and me, BT and Minx will
strip it by the side of the road :)

The first thing i did was to drain the floats, i got about 2-3ml, maybe a bit more
of water out of the floats, there was a itty bit of gunge too, but not that much,
might pay to re-drain them methinks.

However in 40 mins im signing loan paperwork and then im going to take to the
bike with metho and carby cleaner and do a couple hundred km's on it, then go
and trade the bike in [1]

[1]I'm only doing this so the bike doesnt let me down when i trade her in *grin*
