The Older Gentleman was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
They certainly do. The plumbing on the later RXs is pretty impressive
if you compare it with the early ones, but IMHO it negates the basic
    simplicity of the engine.
It's not only that, one of the main, still unsolved problems with
Wankel engines is that the shape of the combustion chamber is highly
inefficient due to the shape (non-EU banana). In order to achieve
proper combustion, Mazda has experimented with dual spark plugs in
order to achieve better combustion. As long as this problem remains
unsolved, Wankel engines will still rival two strokes in both
    emissions and thirst.

Ah well, guess we'll have to find another NG to chat about you in then.

  3. Heh.

Well, it gives Bear somewhere to pour out his vitriol, and I only lurk
occasionally (like with uk.rec.sheds), so feel free. I ain't posting.

Get in touch with Graham at startright motors in Hunslet. If there is one
    available, he'll have the SP.

Did anyone see that mildly awful program ( 2 parter) on string theory
    recently?

Really? I thought the TT they won was an open class. BIMBW. Anyhow, I
don't want to get into that argument. It's just impressive that such a
radically different design can be successfully campaigned.
Not an issue for racing though. And the road legal version wasn't that
smoky. Does have a total loss lube system though ;-)

You are right about modern emmission regs. The big problem with wankels
as an automotive engine is the narrow powerband unless you port it wide
open and make it thirsty. If a nice variomatic gearbox like the ones
used on Kannon motorcycles could be made light enough to not cancel out
the weight advantage they could be run at a more efficient and cleaner
constant speed and generate even more power.
Could never match the power of what? Another 588cc bike, or an 1150cc
    bike? Or an 1800cc bike?
Heh, I noticed the difference between IDS and Bear has reversed again.

I had a quick look and a single <waves> post, to someone who used to
frequent the shed, but I think some in the cafe wouldn't appreciate a
wholescale UKRM invasion so I'll leave 'em in peace too.

I thought they *did* pull, being an aerofoil. I mean, the other word for
    them is "airscrew".[/QUOTE]

Push/pull is effectively the same thing anyway. Shifting a mass of air
from one place to another is what does it, both in prop and jet
engines. The 'push' analogy is somewhat better, however, given that
all of the displaced air is pushed (initially) directly backwards from
the prop, whereas the 'pulled' air comes from a much wider angle.

This is also true with marine 'screws' - it's the 'pushing' of the
water that does the work, not the pulling.

The measure of thrust, as the mass of fluid displaced/time, would be
equally valid for props as it is for jets, and also equally valid for
    water and air applications.

Rockets, of course, are simpler to understand as gas being forced
backwards, given that there's no intake, but the effect is exactly the
    same.

    Lets take a look then:

Well duh. Do all topics on UKRM have to be about the present?
OK The auction of norton rotary components is next week I think.

Have a look at the 1994 results below. First and third in the Bitish
Supercup. Thats's less than ten years ago innit?

Anyone would think it was something important like having seen Bill
    Hicks live...

Thanks for the considered input..... NEXT!

"For 1993 following the tragic death of Mark Farmer, Jim Moodie took
over the ride at the Crighton Norton team and kept the momentum going to
the point where the team had achieved 22 rostrum positions for the
    season.

1994 proved to be the last year for the Crighton Norton team with both
Brian and Colin going on to other projects. It may have been the final
season for the British bike team, but they dominated with Ian Simpson
winning the British Supercup Championship and Phil Borley taking 3rd
spot. Over the 93 / 94 seasons the Crighton Norton’s proved to be very
very competitive taking 74 rostrum positions in two seasons!"

I'd guess the results page needs sorting out for the '93 results.

Don't let that affect your prejudice though...

Fair enough, the finances were fucked. The FIM ruling was just another
    nail in the coffin.

Wish I'd known about it earlier, I'd have had a bid on one of the little
drone aicraft single rotor engines. 30 horsepower from a cylindrical unit
about the size of a Quality street tin. No vibration either.

  20. Yes; although I thought it was a three parter.
Didn't think it was that bad, although I was
ignoring most of the effects and actually
doing something else at the same time
    (gluing the paper Vmax mostly)
