End-of-tax-year purchase

  1. New Intel 20" iMac with a bit of extra hardware (HP
    printer/scanner/copier) and 1.5GB of RAM.

It was either that or a new Nikon D200, and the mac won out. The D200
    can wait another year.

WTF is an old duffer like you going to do with 1.5GB of RAM?

Do you even know what RAM is?

FFS, how do you manage to survive in a profession where words are
    important?

You mean "envious", in case you hadn't worked it out.

And I'm not - if I wanted to waste my money on an iMac, I would. But
one Jobbie-boxen in the house is more than enough already.

  10. Well, quite. And I can have a spiffy iMac even if I'm not going to use
one-twentieth of its potential. I mean, you bought a Fireblade....

Apple have just announced how to partition the mac adn run windows XP on
it, ive done it at work and its bloody fast. So get the best of both
worlds. It now means I can ditch the Tosh pIV and only carry my Mac
Laptop. Wahey no need for sports panniers on me ZX6r.

It's up and running (and being used to type this). Some things still to
sort out. Got to get a decent FTP client installed. Move over my browser
    favourites.

It also came as a surprise to find no Appleworks installed - only a
    trial MS office.

Assuming you don't want to use command line FTP, what's wrong with the
    Finder?
You need to buy iWork these days, I think.

I got Appleworks on this laptop (G4 iBook), and to be honest, they may as
    well have not bothered.

  16. AFAICT, Mac's FTP allows you access into the machine but I can't see how
    to access other ftp sites.

Anyway, I use Transmit, which is a lovely little Mac app. Downloaded it
    now.

That doesn't appear to have much in the way of WP.
I quite like Appleworks. And you can save/open Word documents in it. I
really don't like MS Word as a WP app.

    It's shit on a Mac, sadly - there's an X11 port of 2.0, or a dodgy
(non-Intel) native version which is a branch of 1.1

I can certainly access the FTP site where one of my websites lives.

In Finder, it's Go | Connect to Server, or press Command-K. In the box that
pops up, type ftp://whatever.site.com and click Connect. Enter your username
and password, and optionally save it to the keychain. Your FTP site's
folders and contents then just appear as a standard Finder window.

I get the overwhelming feeling I'm trying to teach someone to suck eggs, here
    ....
Yeah, saw that, but $30 buys you a half-decent bottle of claret :D

Using the finder to mount your FTP site on the desktop only allows
    read-only access.
