    Shame I paid £4 to her charity to be watching a live webcast. And it's shit.
    i.e. Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)
    I only paid two hours ago, but it's gone downhill. Still, I've worked in IT,
    and I know that when there is alcohol flowing IT people are there first.

    Why? What the **** has she done worth a mention?

    What benefits, in general, will come out of this?

    WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT?

    I take it back. They replied to my email, when they should have been
    partying! ... I feel like such a killjoy.

    Anyway, they'll be showing Ellen coming in at 7.30am tomorrow.

    None. You're right. Disband the team. Disband all R&D departments all
    around the world. Everywhere. We've done enough.
    My god! the scales have fallen from my eyes. Cease all sports
    immediately. Get rid of all technology research departments. They're a
    huge waste of time. We're perfect. Nothing remains to be done.

    ....

    ....

    ....

    I'm bored. What shall we do?

    Well, honestly. We don't need sail power, we've got perfectly good
    engines to do that sort of thing, much faster and more conveniently. I
    genuinely fail to see what all the fuss is about. It's basically just a
    "look what I can do" thing. No I'm not bloody trolling either. It's
    hardly going to produce any mass benefits for people at large, just her
    (and her agent's) bank account.

    Persuade me otherwise?

    We don't need motorcycles that can exceed 70MPH. They're basically just
    a "look what I can do" thing.
    Why does it have to produce any mass benefits for people at large for it
    to be worth doing? Was climbing Everest worth doing? Why does anyone
    bother trying to run 100 metres in less than 9.78 seconds?
    I probably can't. But you're still wrong.

    You know, you've got me there. I've often done things just because I
    felt like it. Defeat admitted.
    Can't answer that. Another Southerner (note - although not unknown,
    it's very rarely locals) died at the weekend, on (or more accurately
    falling off) a relatively minor bump on the landscape here in Cumbria.
    And people still want to climb the big ones? They must be mad...
    For the shiny, shiny gold medal of course. And to be remembered (albeit
    briefly) for having done it. Then there's the lucrative talk show
    circuit, personal endorsements and sponsorships...
    I'll accept that. Still can't see why such a big fuss though. People
    want to go swanning off round the world in a plastic bathtub, or even
    three stuck together, that's their right. Just don't bother me. Nobody
    holds a gun to their heads to make them do it. (Apologies to any former
    Vietnamese refugees reading this, who may in fact have had that happen
    to them...)

    Don't need.

    Going to fucking have anyway, because I can.

    I'm talking myself completely into losing my attempted argument, aren't
    I?

    Hang on, recalibrating brain...

    <insert screwdriver>
    <1/2 a turn anti-clockwise>
    <remove screwdriver>
    <reboot>

    That's it. Forced myself to realise I simply have no interest in
    sailing and related matters. McArthur's achievement is of no perceived
    relevance to me; this in no way detracts from what she's done, and I
    hope all those who are interested enjoy the show. I'm off to do
    something else.
