"Today was an epic involving Steve and myself re-wiring the Tenere by
the side of the motorway in about four inches of snow. Such fun."

From which we can deduce that the poxy thing fritzed itself for the
third time. Amazing. I'm so glad now I didn't buy one.

  8. Seems it was a Boxhead Bodge that brought it to a halt - the German
'repair' was more of a 'shove this wire in and hope'.

They fixed it by stripping the wiring from the indicators to use a
    proper plug-in connection.

Get the tickover right on the air and idle screws, for which a pair of
mercury gauges can be handy, though you can do it by ear (and exhaust
pressure). If I'm doing it properly I wave the Morgan carbtune over it. But
this is all about stable idle and not stalling at tickover. The choke
gaskets, o-rings, float heights et all need to be in good fettle. Don't set
the tickover with the engine red hot or it will stall out in normal use.

Then you adjust the cables at the carb, 2mm of free play and so that the two
sides pick up at *exactly* the same time which is done by ear and feel. Just
by pressing down on each cable near the carb and rolling the throttle on a
little you soon get the sweet spot.

Bob is you cross dressing auntie.

Looking at it I think the problem was the little 'tang' that locates
the connector in the block was originally bent back so the connector
wasn't locked in the block, a bit of vibration and it worked loose
hence the first break down. Whoever 'fixed it' in the summer just
pushed the connector together until the connection was made... and
    ready to fail again.

As well as the female connector being mis-assembled I think the water
seal around it was also damaged, or the German mechanic managed to
**** this up when he worked on it- he seemed to have also damaged the
connector block so there wasn't anything for the tang to latch to
anyway. Three or four days of salt water reduced the spade connector
to little more than copper oxide dust (and took the surface off the
    regulator as well).

I can't for the life of me work out why the German mechanic didn't
just strip the connector off and crimp a new one on. As it is now it
really needs a new connector block and connector. Plus of course
repairs to the indicator wiring. This will probably mean a new loom
rather than a few minutes with some crimp connectors, some heatshrink
and some suitable dialectric grease to keep the salt water out of the
connector. Poor design really putting it in the direct spray of the
wheel (should have had the connector on the other side, away from the
    water flow).

If it was mine I think I'd fix it myself rather than **** around with
Yamaha unless, of course, they do a recall. Then again, I'm too used
to having machines that don't have any reliable history, let alone a
    guarantee.

I wonder if the hundreds of FJRs in service with UK plod have been
modified, bearing in mind the extra load on the wiring with all their
surveillance & comms kit. Hopefully, like all the wobbly suspension Pans,
    they will be grounded...
