    Indeed so.

It's not an iPhone, which may need clarifying. I couldn't be bothered to
read up the bits of the thread I'd missed to see if that might be relevant.

    Like you'd fucking know.

I think it's been explained how we operate on these trips and I think
someone spending over an hour to get me going again yesterday says
more than your posts ever will.

I'm beginning to think that sometimes it's better to know when to stop
but I hope I never reach that point.

Maybe you should have fixed it then?

For all the problems with charging its battery the Tenere was a better
choice than the outfit. 200 mile tank range, waterproof luggage and
comfortable cruising at a genuine 80mph as opposed to 100 mile tank
range, leaky old BMW panniers and evil to ride at any speed.

Metzeler Tourances work well enough in snow and slush btw, ice may
have been more difficult but we didn't have to ride on any.

Lack of attendance was nothing to do with the bike.

You don't take an outfit because it is better or worse than a 'chair but
because both are fun in different ways.

    100 miles from a K tank? J.H.C.
    Easily fixed mind.

    I had those on my old R1150GS - they're actually a fantastic all-round
    tyre.

Not really, they're shite in anything resembling wet mud. But so are
all road-biased trailie tyres, so I won't hold that against them. The
main problem with Tourances is there's a huge number of dud ones out
    there.

You folks have one so you should know.

A 'chair gives you added challenges with every long fast left hander and the
ability to carry tons of stuff you don't really need (1). A 100A Hr battery
to help with heated clothing.. And you feel like your grandfather, shit you
    *look* like your grandfather.

With a solo one can go faster, though not much TBF in snow. The mind can
wander on fast m-way bends towards the possibility of black ice. When it
breaks down you don't have a snap-on tool cab and copious spares kit.
Traffic filtering is an obvious benefit.

I guess the other thing about an outfit with a roof is the ability to sit
inside with the primus running while waiting for the AA.

    (1) Until you need it

There is a setting so you can turn off the prompt "I've found XXX network, do
you want to try to connect to it?". If you set it (so that it disables the
prompt) the iPhone will try to connect to any new network it finds
automatically. (if it's not connected to one already)

My old 2G iPhone, with that settings set to "do not nag me" would find an
unsecured WiFi network, try to connect to it, fail, and then fall back to the
cellular data. No problem, it managed to get connected one way or the other.

The 3GS (and 3G?) iPhones, set up to do the same, find an unsecured network,
try to connect to it, fail, and DO NOT fall back to the cellular data.
    Leaving you without a connection.

Which means I've got to turn ON the stupid "I've found XXX WiFi network"
prompts, tell it "No, **** off" every time it finds one and it'll then use
    the cellular connection.

Yes you can simply turn off WiFi but then I'd have to manually turn it back
on when I'm at home or work and it's less work to hit tha cancel button at
    the prompt :)

  19. Well, I have WiFi switched on all the time, and set to 'do not nag'. I
have WiFi at home and have no problem leaving the house and getting 3G
data by the end of the driveway.

I got to other peoples places where I am allowed WiFi access, and it
hooks up no problem, and again, back to cellular data when I leave.

    Yes, that isn't a problem.

What is a problem is these "open" access points that then open the "enter
your CC details for 5 mins internet access" when you browse to anywhere.

The phone successfully connects to the WiFi point, thinks it's got a good
connection and tries to use it, resulting in email / whatever timing out.

Whilst it's connected to these type of APs it doesn't recognise it can't use
them and revert to cellular data.
