    Latest
"100 miles to go, snowing more heavily now. Confidence level droppng
due to road conditions but planning to press on until we leave
    motorway then review."

    And then the bombshell:

"Platy returning to hotel. Donals and I going on. I feel my ability to
make a senesible decision has deserted me."

    <Puzzled>

    What ability?

As for Platy, he's been put on a charge for desertion.

"40 miles from site and going for it. still snowing. Riding conditions
    ok".

Platy then turned up having changed his mind about going back.

They're going to see how bad the roads get when they get off the
    motorway.

Christ it's just like 633 Squadron, when they radio to say the AA guns
haven't been destroyed, and they press on regardless.

    <thinks>

Mind you, most of them died.

Britain should be proud of them. Now all they have to do is survive
    and then get back.

Eh? All they have to is get there.

None of the great cold-weather explorers ever made it back.

What do you suggest they do, wait around in the cold with him? Then
you'd have 3 hypothermic cases instead of one.

If I'd not been off my face on morphine and so have no recollection of
the ambulance loading I've had told platy to go on with the others
when I broke my leg last year. Him being there when I came round was
very much appreciated (despite the fact the bastard told me it was 3
days later) but not required. By your reckoning should Steve, Packer
and Sweller all sat at my bedside as well?

    **** that's a frightening thought.

Oh yes I did. Stiff upper lip and all that.

I hope Donald took up my suggestion of rubber matting on the panniers and
    fairing.

    It's a sidecar rally, really!

  14. Latest bulletin: "All present and correct. Platy 'somewhere' but we'll
find him in a while. Lots of snow, had to dig holes for tents.

  16. Mawson did. Even after having to spend another winter in the
Commonwealth Bay hut with two other people -- and the radio operator had
    become unhinged...

Ninnis and Mertz weren't so lucky, of course.

and now not answering the phone.

Sweller and Packer at the hotel and plan to leave early tomorrow.

Platy did make it to the campsite but had left his bike a short
distance away having dropped it. The bloke who helped him pick it up
put it in his garden and gave him a lift to the site.

Andy was saying they'd had a foot of snow since arriving at the camp
and that the wood they'd bought was almost covered.
