I need some resistive (resistance) wire for a little project I've got
in mind so where's the best place to buy it from?

I'm thinking Maplins would be a good starting point but my experience
of their staff suggests that the useless cunts know even less than I
do and that could be very dangerous.

Another question is should I rely on altering the length of wire to
get the temperature right or should I be sensible and wire in a
    potentiometer of some sort?

Nichrome wire and a pot. Why not but a cheap toaster and get the bits
    you need?

Just twist the ends together and throw the switch YKIMS.

I very much doubt if Maplins sell resistance wire (stands ready to be
proved wrong) but their online catalogue is so useless I CBA to look
at it. A quick google got this result http://www.resistancewires.co.uk/
They sell as little as 1m they say.

Personally I'd use a pot or a model railway controller.

They look like a suitable target for my attention.

They've even got a handy little calculator so I can work out what I
need. Hmm, 3mm x 0.2mm tape comes in just right.

    Thanks for that one.
I might not need to bother if I can get the correct thickness tape.

28swg resistance wire on a small spool.

    "A 28.35g (1oz.) reel of 28swg Constantan (55-60% copper, 45-40% nickel)
wire suitable for making rheostats etc. Can be used as a thermocouple
when twisted with copper wire. A temperature difference between the
wires of approx 25 C gives around 1mV with temperatures in the range 0 C
    to 50 C. Resistance: 4.2ohms per metre. "

Now I've had a look I can see it's 0.375mm diameter and can be
soldered, that's good. It's slightly higher value in Ohms/Metre than I
wanted but I can reduce that easily enough and it's not a lot higher
than I needed so may not get too hot.

I wonder if I can flatten it without breaking it? At a guess I'd say
that if I squeeze it in a vice I could flatten it a bit and still
leave the ends round to make connecting it easier.

Stainless mig welding wire does a good job of slowing down current. I made a
set of heated grips with 6 metre.
Put your multi meter on ohms, clip your tester on 1 end and move the other
tip along the wire until you get the resistance you want. Simples squeak

I reckon stainless welding wire will be too thick. I want something
that's narrow in width and thin enough to be able to form it to the
shape I want just by pressing on it rather than having to physically
    bend it iyswim.

I might as well be honest about it and admit that I'm trying to sort
out a heated visor so I don't get the inside of my visor freezing at
seriously low temperatures and I don't want to buy a special helmet
such as the ones sold to people using skidoos.

It shouldn't be beyond me to sort it out but the last thing I want is
to melt the fucking wires to my visor. I know that if I buy the tape
type resistive wire I can superglue it to the visor and 2mm strips
that are about 0.25mm thick should be flexible enough to do the job
and not so wide as to make me feel like a polar bear in London zoo.

A likely tale. You will need to come up with a better
story than that to cover your hot bondage fettish.
