Electrical problem, Need some help where to start looking

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Darren Forward, Feb 22, 2004.

  1. I have a Yamaha TZR 125 12-volt electrics.

When the engine is at tick over all the Lights, behave as normal,

When the engine is running above a fast tick over say 1500rpm, the
lights dim and the indicators do not flash.

    What could be the problem?

    Thanks

    Darren

Not at all. We had a GT125 Suzuki doing donuts and rolling burnouts on
Bedford Market Square one night with the engine running backwards. Also
Suzuki X1 mopeds would run backwards if you bump started them in the
    wrong direction.

Early RD400Es would sometimes stutter at traffic lights in the rain and
on tickover, when the rider went to pull away the bike would head
towards whatever was sitting behind. That was because water would drip
down the CDI box leads and into the electronics. It was cured by turning
the CDI box round by 180 degrees

    Something backwards..

    Hey!

    You`ve intrested me here....

How would you tell if it`s running fowards at tickover?

    Strobe the magneto?

Do they have mech.auto advance?(thinks.....they don`t) or does it matter?

The last time I had to deal with a stroker`s timing was in 1979!

AIR the magneto/generator has an arrow of rotation on it (as per tyres) how
would you tell if it was spinning the right way at 1000rpm unless you had hi
    def.spectro.scopic.cameras?

Hmmm..... maybe most stroker riders are riding backwards but just don`t
    realise it...;-)

Sounds a little like the sort of problem I have sometimes with some of the
higher revving engines in the equipment I have at work, most times it's a
faulty regulator/diode on the output side of the alternator.
Have it checked by your Yam dealer or an auto electrician.
If it's just a diode/pack/regulator or the like it shouldn't be *that*
expensive to repair instead of replacing the entire unit. Regulator might be
Mcspensive, but possibly available form a local breakers if it's a separate
    unit.

Put it in gear and very slowly let the clutch out. You'll soon find out.
See above, it's quicker and easier.
Some strokers do, with the usual sprung weights
I don't recall seeing any arrows on any RD i've done the timing on. You
just get to know what way it goes round
Well, I was told you needed to be a bit backwards to even consider
    buying a stroker.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Lozzo
Redline it and dump the clutch. You'll find out even sooner...

If its running backwards you suddenly shot into the side of your Saab 900
putting a dent in the door.

    DAMHIK ....

My mate did the same with an RD400 at lights in the rain, he blamed the
bloke behind for ramming him and got an insurance payout. The bloke in
the car swore blind my mate reversed into him but, I mean, everyone
knows that bikes don't have reverse gear :)
