Electric start Morinis - worth keeping E/S?

I'm just in the process of sorting out the excess spare parts for my
    Morini basket case.
I have at least 2 starter motors, along with the relevant clutch and
engine covers. One of these covers is currently at £26 on ebay, so it'd
    be worth selling them.

From all reports I've seen, the electric starters are a waste of time.
    Is this true?
I was thinking of keeping the motors for spares, but if they are
useless, I may as well get rid.

Also, when I put it back together, is there any point in putting in the
    electric start motor?
I've not got a problem with the kick start, and if it is as useless as
predicted, it'll just be dead weight to be carried around.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Alan.

  2. There's one thing I've found the electric boot good for - when the bike's
been standing a bit and is less keen than normal to start, you can get jump
leads off the car battery and make it turn over good and proper.

It's also handy (provided it will actually start the bike) for that
embarrassing moment when you stall the bike at a traffic light or similar.

<Considers old late unlamented Morini 500>

The worst-designed and most incapable electric start system ever
fitted to a motorcycle, with the possible exception of the one they
put on the last-gasp Norton Commando

While we're talking Morini's, father-in-law has just been offered a
    morini "custom".

Squinting at the blurry photos provided it looks to be a standard 350
    Excalibur.

Anyone care to suggest a market value?

A half-sucked Werthers might be overvalueing it.

Yes. They're a pain in the arse to set up and stop working roughly five
    minutes later.

  8. FT500, XS650? To be fair to both of those, they did work when they left
    the factory.

You're not trying to say that there are worse than the one on the Norton

Anyone who makes 12v by fitting two 6v batteries has me worried. AMC has
    a lot to answer for.

    XS750.
Did start the bike for a while. Otherwise best used to prime the
    engine prior to kickstarting it.

    Indeed.

The one in this picture is not 100%, the indicators should be in the bar
ends handy for when you bin it. But it is otherwise a reasonable
    picture.

As can be seen in this period advert.

Can't find a picture of the battery layout, but it was one under the
seat and the second behind the left side panel.

  18. Oh I dunno. loads of BMW twins have 12V coils by wiring 2 6V ones in
    series.

I had mine in 1990 - I can't seem to find a picture of it, which is a
surprise. Old nail, neither started or charged that well.
