I've been looking at some sites re apartments in Egypt. Based in Sharm el
Sheik, next to a golf coures. Does anyone have any experience/advice on
buying property to rent in Egypt? Particularly around the costs/laws re
    foreigners/taxes etc.

    TIA

    Experience? No.

Advice? Get a big net for the errant balls, install a tee on your roof
and hit them right back. Free *and* fun.

I think Egypt could suffer more unrest in the future, depending on what
    happens with Hamas/Iraq/Iran.
There are more stable places to invest.

Bomb proof glass & doors might be an added bonus.

No probs, Thanks for the info.

I find it hard to find anywhere that is free from unrest now. Anywhere UK
or US people go for hols is bound to be a target for Osama and his merry
men. Then you get into the Basque lot and numerous other crews.

Sharm does seem to be becoming a major tourist centre and hence a big cash
cow for teh Egyptian gov. This should make them rather focused on keeping
the naughty boys out as much as possible.

  9. Heh. A priest around these parts got deported from Egypt some years back
    for trying to convert people.

  10. Forget the golf courses get an apartment near to any harbour. It is
*the* place to dive in the Red Sea[1] and if you can offer "Sleeps 10[2]
at a pinch, divers welcome[3]" you should fill it up all year round.

[1] I should be there May / June.
[2] Divers tend to go in shoals.
[3] You need somewhere to hang up wet kit to dry over night otherwise
they're not welcome as they hang their gear all over the balcony.

Cheers Mick, Divers were another demographic that I had considered. I was
looking at divers/golfers for the Sept - March with the sun worshippers
taking over when it got too hot to play golf. I wasn't sure how you diving
lot got on in 40 degree heat but if you are saying its good all year round
this is starting to sound even better. IF I could get >40 weeks a year
rental then I'd be a very happy man. The apartmets are 3 bedroom(twins
easily in each, two bath with total area of 120m^2 so should be plenty of
    space to hang kit.

I just need to find out what taxation etc is due on holiday lets.

  13. Diving in the summer months is good as you don't need thick wet suits to
keep warm diving down to 30m a 'shorty' will do. You only pull it on
fully when you dive. In the winter months you will need a neck to ankle
    suit in something thick.
    Sorry mate, no idea.

    You could ask on:

    uk.rec.scuba

    some one may know.

  15. See Mick's suggested divers as potential customers.

Friend of mine has bought a flat, near Dhab IIRC, I'll email and ask
him. Also try http://www.yorkshire-divers.co.uk/ and/or UKRS for
    information.

  16. If it does great. I was diving in a 3mm shorty in the Indian Ocean last
    year in Feb no probs.
I have in the past dived in 8degc in 5mm long johns and a 7mm jacket.
The first 'rush' was certainly a shock and I only did one dive.
Now I find anything other than a dry suit chilly diving the UK
especially off-gassing N sitting in a RIB offshore waiting for a second
    dive.

The blubber layer must be getting thinner.

  17. I only use a drysuit here, tried a 5mm full once and never again.

I used to use a 6mm suit for diving in quarries when I first started
but once I'd had a drysuit there was no going back unless it was
summer and I was diving in very shallow water.

I used a 6mm wetsuit 90% of the time when I was cave diving purely
because I didn't want to wreck my drysuit getting to the dive site. If
you add the fact that putting a bloody great tear into a membrane suit
and then flooding it is a very distinct possibility in sumps all of a
sudden a wetsuit is a good idea.
