Ahh - that figures. I'll change my stance from skeptical to offensively
    jealous.

    What a git.

  4. Not necessarily. Norton was winning TTs in the fifties and sixties when
people had *far* better engines, simply because their chassis were so
good. Which was how the Triton was born.

    Hailwood's 1978-winning Ducati had - let's be honest - an archaic, slow
and unreliable engine compared with the competition. But he had a
fabulous chassis, and his own riding genius, of course.
No. see above. You need an engine that can hang together for *just* long
enough. Hailwood's blew up as he crossed the line....
It could be, agreed. It just hardly ever was by the factory.

Hailwood's? I though he rode for HONDA that year.
They suffered a succession of stupid problems, poor quality control and
poor executive decisions to be sure. Aluminium head gaskets, overlength
    pushrods, porous heads etc.

All easily solvable, but I agree, they should have been sorted at the
    factory.

Well, I'm fairly sure that NE *is* a wanker of the first order, but
I'm not quite sure how this story illustrates that point.

Well it rather depends on _which_ jap 4, of course. The daytona would
prolly be quicker overall than anything except for the top litre
sprotsbikes from each of the Jap makers.

Anyway, he said 'keep up', so it'd have a pretty fair chance - i.e. it
    wouldn't be _much_ behind.

Are you being stupid on purpose? Where TOG mentioned Hailwood he was
explicitly refering to his 1978 ride on a Ducati.

He didn't ride for anyone that year.

HE won 3 TTs on a Honda in 1967, and returned in 1978, when he rode
two Yamahas, something else, and a Ducati.

In 1973 he was driving a Surtees in Formula 1, and rescuing Dave
Charlton from a burning Lotus in Kyalami.

TBH I was never that impressed with them compared to my ST. OK, it's a
bit more powerful and slightly sharper steering, but I don't think I'd
have been much quicker on one.

I guess I have to agree with Andy's sentiment really - the gixxer thou
is so _phenomally_ better at absolutely everything it doesn't really
bear comparison. Not ridden the blade, R1 etc. enough to comment, but
I'd guess the same would be true of them...

Some facts from another book about Norton, not written by Alan Cathcart:

    The 1973 Norton Interstate: 850cc, 60bhp@6200rpm, 121 mph.
(That would mean 80bhp for 140mph.)

Phil Read at the Daytona 200 in 1972 was timed at 152.4mph on an
undergeared John Player Norton. The next year's model was more
    streamlined.
(So Alan Cathcart's claim that a 1974 JPN could do 160mph is not
    unreasonable.)

And a couple of twin-engined jobbies - one did 271mph at Bonneville
and the other did an 8.45second quarter mile at 180mph terminal speed.

The book did say that they were not at all reliable :-(

    Nice pop up facts.

My own commando was a joy to ride. The motor had been rebuilt by a mate
of my brothers, and it performed superbly. I went to France and back
twice on it. Scotland for a two week jaunt, and all over England for two
and a half years. It pulled 120 and never broke down on me. One slight
glitch on the way back from france when a carb came loose, allowing the
manifold gasket to singe. Fixed with a piece of cereal packet :)
    YMMV
