    special?

    But no, my post was merely asking if what are commonly considered
    the modern "ugly and/or unreliable[1]" bikes sell in numbers [2]?


    [1] unreliable being relative to other modern bikes
    [2] if yes, I would presume due to people not researching what
    they're about to spend their money on.

    No, this is where you are wrong. To do that sort of velocity and hold
    together, the engines have to be completely re-engineered and virtually
    every single reciprocating component altered, replaced or beefed up.

    Which means the engines were appallingly designed.

    *Any* engine can be made to go and stay together if you throw enough
    money at it.

    Why should it be up to Joe Public to do additional engineering work to
    get the bike to be reliable. If it was well designed in the first place,
    that shouldn't be necessary.

  12. They should have been like that from the factory, though. I think
    that's one of the points someone might have been trying to make. I'm
    damn sure I'll never buy a new bike that needs so much done to it
    after purchase, just to make it perform adequately.

    Actually I'll probably never buy a brand new bike at all, but that's
    beside the point.

    The Commando wasn't marketed as an everyman machine it's competition
    was the Bonneville they were that era's Fireblades. But that era has
    gone.

    I accept there is pleasure to be had from humbling some modern
    machines, I run a 1979 Guzzi, but to constantly crow that its the one
    true machine in the hope of proving they (brit iron) are still
    worthwhile machines belittles them and does you no credit, making you
    appear as an anal, blinkered brit anorak. The Jimmy Goldsmith of UKRM.

    They are history. Nice to look at, nice to hear, but history none the
    less.

    End of story.

    The GT40 was *the* car that Jeremey Clarkson always wanted to drive. But,
    he couldn't fit into one once he'd found someone daft enough to lend him
    one. He ended up getting Noel Edmonds to drive his own around for the
    cameras, and do a review on it instead. Apparently Mr Edmonds has owned
    his from new, and paid around 3,000 quid for it.

  16. Hmm Peter William's was quoted as saying the handling of the prody racer
    frightened the Shit out of him ;(

    1948 500cc model 7 to 1978 850cc Commando, 30 years of engine development
    and they were still trying to stop the Atlas self-destructing.
    But as a piece of Brit history still nice to own and ride :))

    MZ have an honourable racing pedigree. NVT was the death throes of the
    british industry. By the way, NVT stands for 'Norton Villiers Tiumph.

    I think you missed the fact that this thread is all about '70's bikes.

    He bought it around 1969 when he was a young DJ. It is a 100% original
    road-going GT40 of the later variety. Back then, for some strange reason
    you couldn't sell the things to the general public, and racers thought
    them too expesive.
