Ludite! Even I have converted to metric. (Actually I was brought up on

My wife, and most women I know, measure fuel consumption in "number of
fill-ups between paydays". Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  5. Hence the new marketing campaign which is very successful at
    selling vehicles:

"Costs only $8 to fill up!"

Perhaps if I sell my bike, I should fill half the tank with baffles.
Imagine how fast it will sell when I claim "costs only $4 to fill!".

I've brought on minor heart attacks when I tell people it costs $160
to fill the tank on my 4wd. It shocks me that people fail to make
the terribly simple logical conclusion that:

    a) it's a big tank
    b) it rarely needs filling
    c) I don't need to fill when prices are temporarily high/undiscounted.

Hmm a survey of bikery (that's like an armoury) by state seems called for.
Hmm let's collect the data then shall we ? I'll start a new thread.

My son has to fill up his ML320CDI every 900 kms.

Our vehicles are more to do with perceived status and salary

We have a POS Holden Adventra V8 4WD which is way up there in the fuel
    consumption stakes.
    Son's ML320CDI gets 10 l/100kms
We have an SS Holden ute which is being traded on a Navara twin-cab
    (shrug)
    A Holden Storm V6 ute
    A 4 cyl Sonata
    An Accent
    A Getz
    An Astra
    And my Courier ute.
The boss wants to get rid of the Adventra, give the missus the Ml
instead and buy an SLK350 for himself. :)
He also suggests I should upgrade to Merc B180CDI 4 cyl 2 litre diesel
with 80kw and 250Nm. It gets 5.5 l/100 kms, about the same as the
    Guzzi. :)

I had no idea that a B class existed! [1]

[1] Adds it to his list of small but growing 'diesel car options' [2]

[2] Yeah I know it's a shopping trolley, but to me almost all cars are
    shopping trollies :)

I like your GS (I'm not sure what that says about our taste in bikes,
    but it says something).

I actually prefer the G/S (which says I have slightly odd bike tastes I
    suspect :)

The FJR1300 is a tourer, probably not a bells and whistles one but
    definitely a tourer.
I'd consider it as such actually. 2 cylinders and an 'older' fashioned
    design.
bells and whistles = choice of options (factory or aftermarket) and a
    new fangdangled design type.

basic = simpler design (most likely air cooled - possibly 2 cylinder).

As far as I knew a firkin was a small keg of beer (of a particular
size), the other sizes had other names.

Given that a firken holds a fair bit of beer I wouldn't travel at many
    firkins per furlong :)

My point exactly, so why not do it the accepted way?

Because as JL and I both said when I look at the fuel gauge and I have 1/2 a
tank left I find it better to go 15kpl x 11 lts = 165 k's left in tank, shit
I better fill up at this servo as I won't make the next one.
Also when I fill up the car or bike, I put in fuel look at the speedo and I
    still go 1000 k's 100 lts 10 kpl good.

Where does it say I have to conform to the accepted way.
You like it your way I like it mine.

I also drive a landcruiser at 140 lts per fill I am in the same boat but I
only fill it once a month and like you I pick my times.

  18. Googling... yep, I'm impressed. It's not light or underpowered either.
In fact, it makes more torque and about the same power as my 350
Chev! Further, that torque comes on about 1600rpm and continues to
    around 2600!

Right, so that's my XR for trail riding, a sport bike for zipping
round town or down the highway, a ML320CDI for economic haulage,
a small sports car for covered and passenger friendly zipping,
and my old 4WD for challenging four wheel driving.

Heath... off to buy a lotto ticket.

You don't have to, but if you don't we'll expect you to ride a harley
davidson softail and wear lots of genuine harley accessories just so as
to be sure you are an individual ok :)
