I'm told that I need to buy one for Christmas.

I have no clue about such things so which one is best, etc etc?

I will make the standard UKRM response and recommend the one that I
have, irrespective of what else is available :)

I've got a 3G Kindle (current version) and love it.

Font size is adjustable to suit and should you get to a particularly
critical point as you've got to drive to work it'll even read to you.

There's a bit of a trade off feature wise with battery life
    - I like the way that bookmarks sync across kindle devices but that
needs the wireless to be on
    - I like the way the battery can last for weeks between charges but
that needs the wireless to be off

The ability to read outdoors with no problems is brilliant, but it seems
more difficult than a book in low light, but then I simply switch over
to reading on the Kindle app on my iPhone or iPod Touch where the book
opens exactly where I closed it on the Kindle.

The 3G aspects and the ability to browse the web for free seems like a
bit of a gimmick, but I've used it to pick up e-mails on holiday. It's
borderline whether it's worth the extra though, especially as you can
receive PDFs etc free over wifi but they change you to deliver of 3G.
People at work use it to give free international data roaming and are
    delighted with that though.

I've not tried downloading free books on to the think and satisfy myself
with the Amazon store. Some seem to get excited by the fact that you
can't hand a book on once you've read it or lend it to someone, but most
books cost less than a gallon of unleaded or a couple of pints of beer
and we don't get all precious about those.

And in the new UKRM tradition of proving you a link and letting you get
    on with it...

I suspect the Wellers would say the same. IIRC they use theirs a lot.

FWIW last time they were reviewed 'head-to-head' in PCPro the verdict was
that the Sony had the edge technically and did pdfs natively (IIRC) but
that the Kindle had many, many more titles available and the delivery of
those titles from Amazon was very well handled. I /think/ the Kindle just
edged it on that basis. Either way, I've got one on order :)

    Dunno. I got this:

    <http://www.sony.es/product/rd-reader-ebook/prs-350#pageType=Overview>

because it was recommended. I like it. Have to convert .doc to .pdf, but not
a big deal with OpenOffice. I've so far got 56 books on there, all for free.
Dunno if there's so much available in English.

It's worth getting Calibre - a nice ebook library

It's like a Kindle, but not a Kindle...

There's something of a reason for that ;)

That encouraged me to dust off my Rolleiflex 2.8D.

It's got film in it. I discovered this when I took the back off... oops.

Right, that's it dusted and back on the shelf
