eBay - it's madness, I tell 'ee!

I've been looking out for a road-legal trail bike in the 250cc-400cc range,
possibly something scruffy which could stand a bit of tidying up. The local
dealers (Glos) don't seem to have anything, private ads have proved
fruitless and eBay - don't get me started on eBay. Are the prices on there
totally OTT or should I expect to be paying crazy money for a 'winter
project' (in other words a box of rusty parts)?

Of course, persuading Mrs L that 'we' need another bike is another matter...

The mechanical and financial details are trivial compared to this...

'Tis as it always was. 'Cheap' & 'trail bike' are terms rarely seen
    together, unless preceded with 'Wanted:'.

The whole world, and his dog, wants a cheap trail bike, especially
(double especially), in winter. As not that many people buy brand new
road legal dirt bikes, you can work out the effects of supply and
    demand yourself.

A decent used trail bike is just about depreciation-proof. Budget £750
as starting money for a 250-400.
