Just won an original rear rack for the R100RT on eBay.

    Tenner plus postage.

    Bargain.

Just need an OEM BMW box for it now.

I never got round to using mine after I heard they were suffering
cracked rear mouldings on the 'Classics' (did they call the end of
the line models that were two tone paint and came with full spec
    luggage)?

I made some reinforcement plates to run along the insides of the tail
moulding but the clutch splines stripped before I gotroundtuit. ;-(

This isn't the little one - it's the bigger version which also mounts to
    the pannier z-rails.

  4. There was a mint BMW at the Jap Classic show at Donington today, I think
it was an R90 but I'm not really sure, looked very much like this:

    original%20(1).jpg

Show was shit, cos of the date move only half the exhibitors turned up
and the autojumble was pathetic. Waste of an hour of my time and 8 quid,
came away with 2 plug caps for the CB and that was it.

Ah, was mine the 22l or summat (you get these data flashbacks at my
    age).

Also from memory the rack had two side bars that joined *somewhere* to
the side case rails or sub frame but they didn't stop the box / rack
revolving around these mounting points and flexing the rear moulding?

Woah <datablast> ... or was it that the big top case was the one that
put the extra strain on the support system and the little one was
    generally 'ok' ?

    <feels feint>

Haven't done the box thing yet - going to wait until I've got the rack
on - then see if I can molish on a Givi plate.

    It's this rack, though:

Hmmm, at first glance that looks that same as mine and should be if:

It's a stock BMW part as would be fitted to a R100RT Mono

It can take both the large and small BMW top cases (with optional
    backrest pad etc).

Again, from memory the issue was the forward mounting was attached to
the suitably substantial tailpiece moulding but that in turn was only
sitting on the plastic tailpiece 'floor'.

The lower mounts were fairly rigid but fore and aft loads on the box >
rack > tailpiece would cause the fairly thin sections that run forward
and either side of the tailpiece to be bowed / flexed up and down ,
    causing the fracturing.

To test this (even before you get the rack etc) lift the saddle and
firmly push the top of the tailpiece backwards with the palm of your
hand and note the vertical flexing of the side sections.

Looking at the design I also considered passing the forward mounting
loads though the tailpiece to the sub frame via some internal spacers
but whilst doable didn't look very straightforward.

I also considered taking a mould of the BM part and fabricating a much
    stronger one in fibreglass but I got a trailer instead (280 L ). ;-)

Nah, that wasn't a bargain - but Mrs H insists on having an OEM head
unit as she finds the Kenwood CD / iPod / phone head unit I installed a
bit too complex for her needs.
    That is odd.

I have the 22l box for that carrier in the shed, it was the standard box for
    the K100 series carrier

hadn't thought about it to be honest :)

They're 147 quid at Motorworks, so I guess I'd ebay it for half price ish so
around 70 quid :) It has a carrier bolted to the top too

    Thanks for that.

I'm waiting to fit the rack to the bike and see what it's like with a
    Givi box on there first.
