Ebay and 400/4

  1. Funnily enough, this is something I've noticed on some other 400 Fours.

As Timo says, a carb balance should sort it out. They don't stay in tune
    for long.

Getting the carbs off is an utter, utter bastard, especially if they
haven't been off for years. The best way is to remove battery, panels,
and undo all the mountings for the battery/air filter box so you can
move this unit back a bit.

Getting the carbs back on is even worse.

Do a plug chop, check the ignition timing, set the carbs up properly
(you will need vacuum gauges for this) and I'm 99% sure it'll be OK.

What utterly *fucks* the carbs is if the bike has been left standing for
a year or more, particularly outside. A certain ukrm-er came to the
Chateau in search of a decent main jet from an old bank of carbs I had,
and I had to open up three carbs out of the four before I found one. The
others were corroded and gunged to hell.

And one final tip. Don't, whatever you do, be tempted to remove the
float bowls with the carbs in situ.

Groan.. but thanks for the info
I don't suppose they had a vacuum fuel tap, with the feed taken from the N/S
carb? (is that no 1 or 4 ?)

No, it's just a regular tap.

Gauche and droit. As opposed to 'tout droit' of course, which quite
    obviously means 'straight ahead'.

Not sure what that sentence is supposed to mean - the only thing
that's clear is that you don't seem to be able to speak, or write,
    English properly.
