Ta for that. I didn't realise they were so tolerant at low power levels.

    UKRM, learn something everyday :)

If they cause the current to fluctuate (like switching the supply on and
off) to a hot filament I would presume the shock would damage the
    filament with time.

Any bulb - a halogen headlight bulb, or a domestic tungsten bulb -
suffers thermal shock every time it is switched on. That's why when
you switch dipped beam on, or hit the switch going into the living
room, it suddenly doesn't work, when it has reached its allotted
number of shocks (as it were). The good thing about the living room
bulb is that you get to hear that unique 'ping' as it lets go.

That's why it is always the dip filament in a H4 that goes first -
switched on more often, see. But every filament has a hard life and a
limited lifespan - and time is finite, just like our lifespan, dears.

Well in the pissing dark today they were 'OK' Frankly they seemed less
white than the old ones, less defined and generally not awe inspiring.
I shall be order HID's directly I can find out what the 145 takes as
    SWMBO would like some.

You may be right there, but on the other hand ...

Every division of time is finite, yes? A second is a second is a
second, sixty of them make a minute and sixty of them an hour. I
could continue, but I sense your attention span (which is definitely
finite) is approaching its tensile and temporal limit.

    So? Every division of distance is finite, but distance itself is not;
    similarly many other measurements.
