I was thinking that too. That was a proper 'I want' motor of the early
    80's.

It wasn't confined to the eighties - I stumbled across one recently and
only *just* about managed to keep the wallet shut. Cheap, they certainly
    aren't anymore.

I'm sure. If they've lasted this long, they must have been very well
looked after - the old R5 used to rot away at the sniff of rain in a
    weather forecast.

I wasn't able to outrun one with a Beckett proddy tuned RD400 back in
1984. That was the day I found respect for some hot hatches.

Heh. You do know that the just about the only purpose of the hatch is to
    get at the engine?

Apart from a few that were raced, I think most people who bought them
*knew* they had something special. Mind you, most of the ones I've come
across are the Turbo 2 version which is supposed to be a bit more
civilised. Probably didn't go backwards through hedges quite as often as
    the original.

I think there's something about having a hooge engine in a little car
though. That's why one of my all time favourite cages is the Shelby
    Cobra.

I marshalled at a rallysprint in the early eighties and our post won
'post of the day' - the prize for which was a run around the circuit
for each of us. I drew the R5 Turbo for my circuit and I can honestly
say that I'd never beeen so scared in a car that didn't actually
crash. If it didn't wheelie off the line it fucking felt like it -
and the pains in my neck from the humungous accelerative jolts didn't
    go away for three days.

This is a Renault 5 we're talking about? They all looked like shit,
regardless of what bodywork and paint yo put on them.

Yeah, even here the place rattled a bit, but only briefly.

T woke up and immediately thought the bed was shaking as I was having a
    wank. As if!

I slept through it, but have added a note to my book of excuses for
    future use.

I didn't think they ever made the mid-engine Turbo in RHD.

I didn't wake up but some of the guys at work reckoned they felt it
    and we're in Kendal.

No I don't think they did officially, there are quite a few converted ones
about though - possibly none of them are nice though heh!

I'm inured to pains in the neck, so I can desire a car that's so monstrously
powerful that it damages passengers, without worrying about trivial injuries
of that nature. Besides, the way I drive, who's going to know the
    difference?
