E-bay is a funny thing. When people see a Reserve price it hinders bidding.
Best option is to state "I reserve the right to remove the add at any time
as I am listing in numerous places" or something. Then, with 24 hours to go,
you can pull it down if it's not doing well enough. Otherwise, often it gets
into a bidding frenzy and works out quite well.

If you want to look at some great overpriced sales, just look at the digital
camera section on e-bay .. man ... those mums n dads love spending their
hard earned cash on overpriced goods!

  4. Then again, there does appear to be a psychological component to these
things, and 'still registered' does seem to hold some sway.

I've just forwarded the link on to my brother, who was eyeing it off
when it first came on a few weeks ago, but who settled for an XJ750
instead. I think I can hear the muttering from here. :)

A lot of people use sniping programs now. Often you'll see no action at
all then in the last 5 mins 3 people proxy bidding.

The buyers do that to avoid bidding frenzys of course...

Yeah, which means you still won't get it unless you're prepared to pay for
it anyway. The whole sniping program thing is a bit of a joke. When it all
comes down to it, go in there in the last minute, put down a dollar amount
you're prepared to pay, and leave it at that!

"go in there at the last minute" is what sniping programs *do*.

They go in as close as possible to the end time, and put on the max bod
yuo specify, which acts the same as any max bid.

The reason to snipe is to avoid the people who get into bidding frenzies
and who then push the money up higher. If I have a max of $100 and
bid it, I will probably pay less if I bid it at the last minute. as I
couldn't be bothered staying up late or sitting on the machine waiting,
I use a sniping program to do it for me.

I figure "I will pay this and no more". Where "this" is where I know I
    should stop :)

Then I tell the sniping program that, and it will do it at the right
    time.

A major advantage is that this gives me a few days to think better of it
    and cancel the snipe!

I think normal bidders must have gotten attracted by all the bidding
    interest... I jumped out at $126 :)

Sniping programs are also helpful for people with slower connections, or
connections with high latency (like this sat link).

    Motorbike couriering was for me:

    1 the most dangerous

    2. the dirtiest

    3. the most unprofitable

"job" I've ever attempted. I tried it for a few weeks, and gave it up before
    I
    a) crashed

    b) got booked (several of my colleagues made more for the guv'mnt than
    themselves)

    c) ground my bike into powder.

If you MUST do it for a buck today/this week, I understand your problem. Do
yourself a favour and plan to retire early.

As for the so-called management of the company I worked for, they were a
bunch of fly-by-night shonkies. I very much doubt if the standard has
    improved.

Must be Mail Call, they are always desperate to employ better than the
usual crowd of nohopers and unemployables. The money is a bribe if u
stay for a certain period and meet the conditions etc, nobody actually
ever gets paid it due to the ' conditions'
The run sheets are actually reliable, unlike the technology.
With some of the shittiest rates in the industry.
If you work yourself to death or risk life and limb.
The biggest reason not to join, there are still Radio operator
lovechildren, always will be. The computer allocation is a joke and
doesnt really work well. Great if you like doing shit work all day.

Out of 50 bikes, about 3 of them earned that (after 60 hours on the
road, before expenses, GST and tax is taken out)
I regularly earned that and more, it is possible but the learning curve
is steep if you are not experienced.
    Bullshit. Absolute bullshit.

I'd feel honoured if it wasn't for the "howler" quality of the previous
    "winners"!
(does this REALLY beat Atec's "self flagellation is all to rampart" or
    Kiwipete's "That's right. I aren't sure"?)

He attacks Dave milligan's business relentlessly telling us how good his
is yet he won't name what his is.
Fair is fair don't you think considering the attacks have been public.

On a weekend ride over Anzac Day weekend this year, my mobile phone, a
Nokia 6385 (CDMA) was drowned. Nokia no longer sells them. So, I turned
to Ebay. I followed about 14 auctions. In all of them, the lowest went
for over $600, with the highest around $750.

I then discovered that one buyer was getting most of them. I emailed
him, out of curiosity, to ask if he was trying to corner the 6385
futures market. He said that he was replacing his work's fleet of GSM
mobiles with CDMAs. I suggested that he could have have done what I did,
in the end, and purchased brand new 2280 CDMAs for around $220 each. He
never did get back to me.

Not to mention highly libellous. Dave could probably make himself a nice
little earner by taking "Speedy" and his ISP to the cleaners....

It wouldn't be the first time that a New Zealander and his ISP has been
    sued for defammation in Usenet....
