    looks like drug-induced systemic lupus.

I hope the drug testing company had good get-out clause in the trial
    contracts.

Still, there must be thousands of drug tests per year - how often do
you hear of one going wrong?

They took the money, they signed the disclaimers. Prace bets now........

Sod that for a lark. If these drugs were so benign, surely the drug
companies' own staff would be up for some extra cash.

It's the first time for ages that I can recall and in the day and age
    surprises me not a little.

I've been thinking about ferkin Speed Triples for the past 3 hours
    though mostly.

If the Grauniad is to be believed, it's a four step process:

    1 - test on animals
2 - small-scale trial on healthy humans without the condition to
    which the drug applies
3 - small-scale trial on humans with the relevant condition
    4 - double blind wide-scale trial

This one went wrong at stage 2. Oops.

I very much doubt that it would be easy to hush up something as
serious as this case appears to be.

I still reckon it's very rare for a drug trial to go wrong in this
    way.

There are a couple of regular posters who probably have a better idea
    than I, though.

But what about more minor cases where a bit of a hush-money to the
    victim(s) takes care of business?

    you too, eh?

My next-door-neighbour-but-one has one - I must get around to asking
    him how he finds it[1]

[1] though given that I'd guess he works in a Triumph dealership[2] he
may not be the most objective person to ask.
    [2] there's regularly several other new-reg Triumphs[3] parked outside
    the house, and a van.
[3] god, the speed-four is an ugly POS.

as you said, that takes care of business. There's nothing unethical
    about it.

Suppose I might take a run out to Lurgan tomorrow if it's dryish

It's 10bhp down on my Bandit, probably handles and brakes similarly, but
it's 9 years newer and I love that engine. It will have to be special
to make me change, if it does though this Bandit will be a hoot for
someone at around the 3.2 mark.

More about the sort of people who sign up for these ...

I do like the last sentence

"If you can navigate your way around the world with just a backpack, you are
    not a stupid person."

Obviously never been to Earl's Court then

not a bad price, actually. In the proper colour too[1].

[1] Triumph's web site lists black, yellow and blue as options - the
black's the only acceptable choice. Though they had a white one at
    Ally Pally that was..."interesting".

It is the kind of info I would want to have to hand though if ever I
was stupid enough to consider taking part in one of these studies.

    also:

"I have nothing to lose and I can make good money."

well, nothing to lose but your life, and £13K/year is less than my
    booze bill.

    [snip]
    from another BBC page:

The MHRA[1] said it had never seen a situation such as that seen at
    Northwick Park before.

And Richard Ley, of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical
Industry (ABPI), added: "This is an absolutely exceptional occurrence.

    "I cannot remember anything comparable."

For the smaller scale stuff, I'm sure the information is obtainable,
even if any compensation had been paid[2]

[1] Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority
[2] I'd be surprised if the contracts that the testees sign actually
requires any compensation, but as you suggest, I'd imaging in some
cases the drugs company do so out of good will[3].
    [3] i.e. to avoid publicity.

I can see the appeal but if it were my money, I'd seriously consider
the KTM Superduke [1]. It's just sort of, err, less conventional.

[1] They come with 2 yr warranties don't they?

I think it's a toss-up between the two. The KTM looks a bit funkier, IMO,
and they're supposed to be an absolute hoot to ride.

While I'm not generally one for weighing up all the little practical
attributes, I think a tank range of 70 miles is pretty crap, though - it'd
end up as a replacement supermoto
