You would think that the likes of HPI would start asking for the
registration doc serial number, as part of the check.

I'm sure you have the option of doing that - in fact, I don't believe
you get full cover from them if you don't enter it.

IIRC some of them do now.

    SteveH wibbled forthrightly:
Does it mean that they check the number though?

A pal of my lad's has just been fucked royal because of this. He bought a
Gixxer thou and sold it only to have the new "owner" come back a week or two
later claiming it was a ringer. Turned out it was a clone/ringer and he lost
6 thousand. Then he got fucked again with a nearly new Mini Cooper. This
    time for 12 grand.

A happy bunny he isn't, particularly when he did HPI checks on both
    vehicles.

Tip number 1. If you're doing an HPI check, don't **** about, go straight
for the "Gold" check, because that one checks the engine number as well as
the chassis number. No match, no deal and the ONLY thing that was wrong was
    the engine numbers.

took a blunt brush and painted...
    S'wot I was thinking.

Even if the ringers changed the chassis and engine numbers an inspection peep
should be able to tell that the engine / chassis number has been changed.

Also for a bike, if it's been AlphaDotted before it was nicked and turned
into a clone, the ID from that dot will refer to the original bike details
which should be a damn huge giveaway.

Does mean a lot more checking of vehicle history but it's worth it if it'll
save you being ripped off for thousands.

If I'm not wrong, I think this lad saved about 15 quid by not going the HPI
Gold route. The old phrase "Penny wise, pound foolish" sprang to mind.

A DVLA spokesman is currently on BBC Radio5. He hasn't given a straight
    answer yet.

  10. I'm always amazed that buyers don't check engine/chassis numbers as a
matter of course. But they don't. They just don't.

I had a run-in with a seller a couple of years ago because of this. The
bike was a ringer, plain and simple, but he'd had it for 20+ years and
simply never looked at the frame number. You could see where the number
had been re-stamped, and the vestiges of the old number underneath it.
    Amateur job.

I've also seen a really, really good fake V5 - It was almost perfect.
    Even had the right watermark.

I always check everything. Not because I think the seller is trying to
rip me off, but because I know the seller never made the proper checks
    when he bought the bike.

He was on the phone this morning asking *us* about another Mini he's seen.
Why the ****, I 've no idea, coz we don't do HPI checks. When I mentioned
tht to him he said "I was only asking". I can see much grief for this lad in
    the coming months.
That's exactly the situation chummy finds himself in. He's not bent and
bought both vehicles believing that they were both straight. To discover
both were far from straight after he'd sold them (in good faith) was a
shock, but apparently, not a big enough shock to really wake the **** up.

Apparently it does and according to something I read last week, if you get
hit by lightning, you're one hundred thousand times more likely to get hit a
    2nd time.

Like I say, I see grief for this lad in the coming months:)
