DVLA: Thumbs up

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Sep 23, 2004.

  1. I got a producer last night which didn't worry me at all as all my
documents are in order but when I got home I remembered I sent my
licence off to the DVLA late last week.

    Bugger.

I phoned them in a bit of a panic stating my position. They has a quick
"Google" and discovered that my licence had indeed been processed and
was waiting to be sent out. A few days, he reckons.

    Well, that's a relief then.[1]

[1] But what happens if it doesn't get here? What do I tell the
Metropolitan's finest when I turn up to the station with MOT, insurance
but no licence? I don't have a receipt for it and they've only got my
word that I sent it off.

DVLA *guarantee* processing and despatch of your licence within 14
days. Allegedly. They turned mine round in 12 days a couple of weeks
    ago.
You'm a numpty then, son. I sent mine Special Delivery and got a
receipt for it an' all that, just in case. It cost ~3 quid but I felt
that was justified in this case. In your situation I'd hang on till
the 7 days for the producer are nearly up, hoping the licence will
reappear. If it doesn't, go to the cop shop and hand over the docs
you have and tell them your licence is on its way back. Tell an
Inspector though, ffs - don't rely on the civilian on the front desk
    to get it right.

It's not as if Plod can't check with DVLA in any case, is it?

[1]The last time I had to send my licence in to DVLA, I went to my
local(ish) DVLA office instead. I got a receipt and a little explanation
note from the lass behind the counter in case I got tugged over, and the
turn-around time was less than a week. Visited the office on Monday, got my
    licence back Saturday morning.

The moral of the story? If there is a DVLA office nearby, use it.)

[1] Not that any of this is of any use to you at the moment...

  4. I didn't know that. I thought it was 6 weeks.
That's what I was going to/have to do. It's a right PITA though, because
I was going to get all the other stuff legal done today.
Nice one, and get it in writing that I've mentioned it.
Well exactly, but I don't expect them to make my life any easier by
actually doing it. They knew I had a licence last night and asked how
    many points I had.

I sent my licence off in 2001, still ain't had it back.
Got a producer last month, phoned DVLA, bod said there is provision in the law
that you don't have to produce it if it's not reasonably practicable.
I went to plod and tried that on, but they just gave me an extension on the
producer(scribbled a new date on the top of original). I will be going back
before the 29th for my 3rd extension. Hoping they'll get pissed off with this
and just drop it, but I doubt it.

In summary, tell them where your licence is, and get an extension on the
    producer.

It's is up to six weeks for *new* V5/2 (if you got a car without one and
DVLA dunt know about the last owner etc) Having said that, I got mine in 3,
and my replacement licence (cos I are a fuckwit and lost the old one) in
    1.5 working days.

  8. Shouldn't be a problem, as long as you know your licence number. I always
keep a record of that sort of thing. Years ago, when given a producer, I
simply quoted the number to local Plod who told me that was sufficient.

  9. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
