The other advice I got was "Don't buy one". I chose to listen to this
advice. This may not have been a Bad Thing.

How much are they these days?

And how likely that they're in decent nick?

Well it *is* september and march now, but then (and Y was the last
letter to which this applied) it was August 1st -> July 31

Er, you're wrong as well. Y was the last of he bi-annual ones to use
a letter. Those started with S I think in Sept 98.

    R, Aug 1997
    S, Sept 1998
    T, March 1999
    V, Sept 1999
    W, March 2000
    X, Sept 2000
    Y, March 2001
    51, Sept 2001

Go on then, but remember "two wrongs don't make a right answer, unless
    it's in ukrm".

  13. You want to know how it's been used. If they're left standing for ages
the belts sort of harden slightly in that position and you can get
    cambelt hassles.

Check all the electrics. The connectors are the main problem area.

Fork seals, chain (they knock out chains very fast), and if the rear
wheel's ever been removed, feel for lateral play in the sprocket
carrier. It's possible to put the spacer in the wrong way round and then
the carrier rubs on the swinging arm.

  14. I think it's true. Better one that's got some miles up, and has been
hammered and religiously serviced, than one which covers 1000 miles a
year and takes four years to get to its first overhaul.

    Eh? Two surely?

The first one, then the one at 3500/4000 ?

Service history really. Check the book for genuine Ducati
dealer stamps. Small service (~350 quid) for 6K miles or
one year and big service (~550 quid[1]) 12K miles or 2 years.

It should have had a first service (nut tightening really)
around 1000 miles then another at 3K miles plus one for
the extra year. One of these *should* be the biggy but if
not allow for this in the price.

Other than that it shouldn't have any problems at all
because it's a post 2000 bike. Not really much goes wrong
with them - even the electrics are fine on these. Just
check the rear shock for corrosion if it's been ridden
in the winter without cleaning as these get fucked quite
    quickly.

As it's matt black it will be a "dark" which is the budget
version, so I think these only had one disk up front, but
they may have changed that later on. No seat cowl either,
but these aren't expensive to add on after. Only 5 gears too!

If you need anything more specific, checkout:

You can get the manual online:

[1] but it really is *everything*, even the fork oil

That seems stupidly expensive for an old, air-cooled twin.

Surely you could get a 916 serviced for that kind of cash?

Yes, good point. I was quoting 4v prices :-/

Just checked at OnYerBike.net and their prices are:

    Interim (6K Mile/1 year) = £349
    Major (12K Mile/2 Years) = £459

OYB is an official Ducati dealer so their prices are
pretty much what every Ducati dealer will charge.

That's what put me off a 750SS when I bought the TRX from them - one
look at the 'menu' price was enough to persuade me that a 750SS wasn't
the bike for me (at the time).

However, I know I could run one on a shoestring now by doing everything
    other than valve clearances myself.

Checking the valve clearances on the 2v air-cooled isn't
that bad considering. Dunno how easy they are to shim
compared to the 4v but Ducati on do a ****-off great
big pack of shims that you'd only buy if you were a
    workshop.

Even the equivalent packs by suppliers are a tad expensive:
