I've been asked by a friend to look at a 2001 'Y' Ducati M750 with him
    this evening.

Other than general bikey type things anything Ducati M750 specific to
    check for?

4,000 miles, matt black, doesn't appear to have an MOT (why? I have no
idea, it might not be old enough mind). What sort of value? The woman
    selling it is asking £2750.

By all accounts they're a nice bike not as much "go" as the 900 but
smoother. Electrics were a problem but that should have been sorted by
now so it's just down to the usual service and HPI checks and look out
    for crash damage.
I don't think it's a great price TBH but not bad.

If I was after a 750 Duke I'd go for this one:

The description doesn't exactly match the smashed up bike in the picture,
    does it?

I'm not sure if it is smashed up, it's probably a cruel trick of the
light. I know what you mean though.

Look at the instrument binnacle photo. Does the bike normally come with
sharp bits of perspex and a hole in the top of the headlight surround?

With 4000 miles on the clock how many services will it have had? What
    would they have covered?

Brand new, unrated, seller with an account created on the day the auction
    started.

Very brief description that doesn't match the pictures and doesn't even say
    what model it is.

No mention of MOT or MOT worthiness on a 5 year old bike.

    Offer of worldwide postage.

    Hidden bid history.

    Location given as "Nice Item"

Payment only by "Other online payment service" (WU or some dodgy escrow, no
    doubt).

All of the above equals "Don't touch it, not even with somebody else's
    barge-pole".

New Ebayer, zero feedback, very short description, "the engine has
750cc", will post worldwide. I'd be amazed if that isn't a scammer.

It would need an annual service to keep the manufacturer's warranty valid.
A couple of stamps in the service book tells a lot about the owner's
attitude towards maintenance. I would not be happy buying a bike that had
not had any servicing in 3 years.

Indeed. My point was that when I was looking for a duke a few years back,
the advice I got was only to buy one that had been serviced regulary *and*
by a bonafied duke specialist. Its probably less of a concern at such a low
mileage but something to bear in mind.
