It is also George Lucas's "signature". It occurs in all of his films,
as the registration number of a police car in American Graffiti and
stencilled on the hulls of vehicles in Star Wars for example.

Coo, this anorak is comfy, especially in this weather.

    Is it?
Oh well, I've seen one or two of the SW flics, but probably not much
    else of his.
    Heh.

Among other occurrences, it's the call-sign of one of the Imperial
Stormtroopers in Episode IV: A New Hope. Barring captions, there is
no English script visible in any of the Star Wars films, except the
original version of Episode IV - when Obi-Wan is deactivating the
Death Star's tractor beams, the word "POWER" is visible on the
display. In the updated version, this has been digitally edited and
    replaced with "alien" glyphs.
    They are indeed...

I'm pretty sure I've seen it - or something very similar - on a nold London
bus. But you'd need someone with a proper 4-season goretex down parka to
    say for sure.

I'm certain I've seen a still of the front/side of Luke's speeder from
EpIV with the numbers 1138 visible under the dust, stencilled in red
    on orange.

Mind you, I could well err here, as I just had a Wiki for THX 1138 and
found that I was a little off the beam on the details.
That appears to be an original Snorkel parka that you're wearing.

    It's not entirely impossible, if it was an early production still;
there were many little "jokes" that only the cast and crew were meant
to be aware of during filming, and should not have been visible to the
cinema audience. The Rebel Blockade Runner spacecraft (the Tantive
IV) shown under attack in the opening sequence had a miniature Playboy
centrefold poster on the inside wall of the bridge, but only the
special effects crew knew it was there.
Heh. I had one of those when I was 8. It must have had a permanent
    effect...

Also the serial number of a battle droid.

Talking of serial numbers, if anyone reads the Freefall cartoon,
Helix's serial number is also Carel Capek's birth date.

    DR says...
When the troubles fired up again in 1969 my dad was one of the many
soldiers rushed out there, leaving my mum back in Gloucester to look
after us 4. Every night we'd huddle round the black and white GEC TV to
watch the news, hoping to catch a glimpse of dad on patrol or something.

It seemed every kid in Belfast wore a fir trimmed navy blue snorkel
parka, and I so desperately wanted one. There wasn't a hope in hell of
me getting one while every 8 yr old scumbag in the Falls Road area had
one though. I think I got more Lego and Meccano for christmas that year.

  14. No Routemaster that I am aware of has / had that plate. However there
were other London Bus types that would get close to that plate indeed.
A series of what were called "DMS" class buses [1] have THX xxx S
registrations. There wasn't a THX113S though. You may certainly have
seen this class of bus in the late seventies when I assume you were
    dispatching.

[1] otherwise branded as the "Londoner" and subsequently modelled by
Matchbox and Corgi for those who might recall their childhood toy

  16. I have a large collection of books - I checked there. However I am sure
the info is also somewhere on the web too.

My memory doesn't do bus number plates - it does other forms of rubbish.
