Driving License and Motorcycle

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by sylvain.gaudan, Jan 26, 2005.

  1. Hi,
I am a french citizen living now in England and I plan to stay here
3 years. I have a french driving license for cars, which allows me to
drive a 125cm3 in France. I would like to know if I can drive a
motorcycle (125cm3) in UK with my french license. The objective is to
    buy a 125cm3 motorcycle.
It is very difficlut to find any infromation on the official web
sites. I asked the police, but they were not really aware about that
    particular problem.
    Thank you for your help,
    Sylvain.

emerged from their own little world to say
Legally, you can drive/ride in the UK on your French licence for 3
    years.

You can exchange it for a UK licence.
    See http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/drvingb.htm

Unless your French licence actually displays a motorcycle pass as a
separate entry to your car pass then to ride on the road you will need a
    CBT pass. See http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/rdmcycle.htm
You can then ride a 125cc bike whilst displying L plates. If you do not
pass a full test within 2 years then your CBT pass becomes invalid and
you will need to retake it.

Not sure but I think it will only allow you to ride it with L plates on and
you may have to do the CBT. Best bet is to contact the DVLA

It is the Des effect innit? I reckon there must be hordes of you
planning the exact same thing. Look, his roots are fucking British ok
not English, don't punish us for it. Besides you can plan all you want
mate, we know you are here now, your plans may not live up to your
    expectations.
I suspect that the easiest route would be for you to buy and register
your bike in France and just use it "occasionally" in the UK.

The ukrm ffaq has some links which describe the process of licensing in
the UK, have a read of it.

Oh, bye the way, the chicory is in the vegetable section.

As the 125 test is equivalent to the same in the UK (including cbt) I
suspect he'd actually get the same entitlement as if he'd passed it
there. I.e. if it's more than two years he'll get an unrestricted one.
