I've been putting off renewing my photocard licence for as long as
possible after the horror stories of people losing entitlements.

I decided that the paper counterpart had been lost[1], and finally bit
the bullet today as it has to be done by the 20th and I'm off to
    Bulgaria tomorrow.

I took it to one of the post offices with the check service. They took
my photo and everything, then (somewhat to my surprised) gave me my
    photocard back.

So that might help anyone else facing the same thing.

[1]No idea where it is, honest. Dare I assume that the expired
endorsements will be absent on it's return?

    @news.eternal-september.org:

The endorsement stays on your licence for 12 months after expiry (so 4 or
11 years depending on the code). Any over the 12 months will automatically
    disappear.

Mine recently came back with the string of convictions reduced to just
    one.

    Three cheers for rehabilitation!

All of mine are well past now. I just objected to spending money on
    getting them removed.
Sensible policies for a brighter Britain.

Allegedly you can send in a SAE these days and they will post your old
    license back.

Did mine yesterday as well, it's been expired for 5 months... oops.
Did you mark the "lost" box on the form? If so, then I guess they have
no need for the photocard? I marked the box, even though the licence is
sitting quite happily on the table at home[1]

[1] Partly due to the horror stories about vanishing entitlements,
partly due to needing to hire a van today

    I did.
    Interesting point.
Mine certainly isn't sitting upstairs on top of the safe.

Until they don't, that is. I think holding onto your old license until you
get your new one in your hands is the only way to avoid any problems.
