Driving Licence renewal

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Speedgazebo MOTP #1, Jul 28, 2009.

  1. I have 3 spent points on my licence and I'd like to get rid of them,
if I send the licence back to have this done, it costs £20. If I were
to change my address, which is free, would the licence come back with
the spent points still on it?
They are only written on in biro so would they bother to print spent
    points on a new licence?

it will come back minus the points - mine did when I moved from Ross to
    here.

It might also come back minus a few groups, or you could gain some.

    Do you feel lucky, punk?

Since Feb 2005, I thought it was 4 years?

You mean points count for 4 years or that they remain on the licence for 4 years?
They always used to count for 3 years from the date of the offence
but could only be erased from the licence 4 years after the date of conviction.

Mine came back with expired points still on when I updated them with a
new address. Had to pay the fee to get them removed.

    Its a 3 4 5 rule , 3 for counting , 4 on your licence and 5 to declare

    hope that helps

So it's really 5 then, If you still have to declare them.

Do insurance companies have a way of actually checking if they are
    more that 3 years old?

Likely an issue of timing. When we moved, a year ago, my licence came
back clean, but the missus kept her endorsement which she'd gained a
    month after I got mine.

I have always declared them, but It does seems to be potluck if the
points, or even all my entitlements, will still be there so I think
I'll do nothing, it's probably safer.

Slightly different tack on this subject, if one had 3 points which were
    expired for
all purposes and wanted to get them removed free of charge whats to stop you
sending the licnce back with a change of address to say one's mothers house,
    then
a few weeks later sending it back again and putting your own back on?

After all you could have theoretically had a bust up with her indoors and
    moved
back and wanted to keep the DVLA up to speed of your whereabouts, then
    made back up with her?

Gives you twice the chance of getting them removed does it not?

Nothing at all, except the idea that by giving a false address you're
technically breaking the law. Wouldn't stop me, but then again, why
you'd be bothered by the expired points anyway is beyond me.

  13. Surely if you lose entitlements you have grounds to complain and demand
    their reinstatement?

Sure, and then wait months while they sort themselves out, refusing to
believe they could make a mistake, checkin ghteir computer records
which show the same error, then demanding you produce the test
certificate (which you gave them uears ago) as proof of the
    entitlement.

At least, that's what a work colleague told me happened to him a
    couple of years ago.

There was a documentary on about exactly that a few months back.
People were having to take their tests again.

  16. I can do better than that.
Photocard needed updating, nowadays, they send both parts, not just the
    photocard.

So I have the old license and the new one.

Whatever you decide, make sure you *don't* send your original license. Hang
onto it and apply for a new one informing the DVLA that you've lost or had
    stolen your current license.

Then when you get it back without your bike entitlement, you can shove the
new one right up their arses and cntinue riding with your current one.

As a T1 sugar mong, I only get a license for 3 years before I have to renew
it and I've never sent one back in fucking years. Now, with the cunts at the
DVLA playing silly buggers, I won't be in the future either.

Having a real (not a photocopy) license, would make it a little more
difficult for them to deny I had the license in the first place.

I passed my bike test 34 years ago and I certainly didn't photocopy
the test certificate before I sent it to Swansea. I'm not even sure
there were photocopiers around back then but there may have been...

If you're so skint that you need to do that to save money then why the
**** aren't you out there selling your arse rather than posting to
    usenet?

  20. 22 years ago here and god knows whether I took a photocopy of it.
Can't even remember what it LOOKED like. Added to that the fact I've moved
about 5 times since then, chances of it even existing anymore are slim.

Mind you, if they lost MY entitlement to drive a motorbike, my driving
license would be blank. (I never learned to drive a car). That should clue
    them in that something's wrong.
    :)
