Downtown San Jose Motorcycle Parking

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by SJ Moto Parking, Apr 17, 2006.

  1. There is a serious lack of safe, secure, and affordable off-street parking
for motorcycles within both the City of San Jose and the County of Santa
Clara. Although the a City of San Jose owns and operates numerous public
parking facilities within the downtown area, almost all of which offer free
parking after 6:00PM and on all weekend days to automobile drivers, NONE are
able to be utilized by motorcycles. In fact the parking of a motorcycle in a
downtown parking garage or lot, even when designated as free, will result in
the issuance of a $25 parking ticket.

Within the entire downtown area of San Jose, there are only 70 motorcycle
parking spots, 56 of which are around the perimeter of SJSU.

Within the entire downtown area of San Jose, there are NO public parking
facilities, garages, or lots which allow motorcycle parking.

About four years ago I had occasion to be in downtown SJ a couple of
nights a week on my motorcycle, and I always parked in one of the lots
near the Knight-Ridder building that was free after 6:00. Never once
had a problem, and the attendants never said anything about not being
    able to park there.

Its NO JOKE. Try it yourself.

There are signs posted at the entrance which state "No motorcycles", parking
in the lot or garage WILL get you a $25 parking ticket, even on Saturday
night when the parking is completely free of charge.

I'm not surprised. I ran into a similar problem in downtown Phoenix.
    Many parking garages refuse motorcycles.

Within the entire downtown area of San Jose, there are NO public parking
I've parked in public lots (San Jose Mall area) without a problem.

It may have to do with "enclosed" garages and the "threatening" appearance
of bikers, loud pipes, or maybe some insurance crap about slippery and oily
concrete and subsequent bike drops that keep owners suspicious of bikes in
general. Seems like it is not only a SJ problem but Chicago as well.

I know there is a SF ordinance against parking on sidewalks now. Fine is
    $100.

It's always been a state law; SF just raised the ticket price.
(BTW, cars parked on or across sidewalks are illegal, too.)

Now that you mention it, in all the years I have been using the free lots with
my cage (mainly the 2nd & San Carlos and the San Pedro lot), I've never seen a
bike parked in one (well maybe once). The sign never caught my eye. I had always
assumed I would be able to park my bike free downtown.

Hmmm... guess I better sign the petition.
