Downgrading from a CBR6 to an enduro for winter

  1. My CBR600 is up for sale as I need the money, and I'd like to get something
along the lines of a KMX200, 650 Dominator etc. I don't know a lot about
these types of bike though. Am looking to spend under a grand, don't want
fancy fairing, easy to clean and maintain, good range and mpg, and will
handle a 20 mile commute to work through winter on both motorway and muddy
country lanes. Doubt it'll go offroad.

Can anyone throw any good suggestions of models to go for?

    Dan TM.

good luck - not a good time to sell
join the queue - 2 of the most sought after bikes, sold in low numbers when
new and rare on the used market

any for sale under a grand are likely to be complete dogs

  3. I have KMX 200, use it whenever I get the chance, excellent bike, quick,
( make sure its 32bhp not 17), very light and flickable, mine is 1989 and
still going strong, some bits, eg exhaust pipes, rot and and seem to be hard
to get some 125 bits fit but not all. If you go for a S/H one check the
paper work as they are often knicked, Oh yes, don't forget to lock it up!

There's an article in RIDE Nov 2004 about buying bikes around 2 grand
and how they cost a lot more to put right.

They got a 1996P Dominator 650 for 1900GBP, and it needed another
1035GBP to sort it out. New discs, new pads, caliper overhaul, new
    exhaust for 450GBP...

Anyone with half a clue should be able to pick up a good bike for a lot
less than 2 grand nowadays. The used market is flooded with good cheap
    bikes.

Yes & no. A decent bike for under 2k certainly. Certain models are still
hard to come by. If your budget is 1-2k it's best to have an open mind
about the exact model you are looking for IMHO. Pick the cleanest bike that
    will fit your purpose.

As I said up there, good KMX200 are rare. Autotrader throws up 2 in a
national search. One is stolen/recovered, the other is advertised as a
    field bike.

    Ho yuss. <Pats 800GBP bike lovingly>

They also got a 1994 ZZ-R600 for 2 grand, and needed 1575GBP to sort it
out. And a 1996 Monster 600 for 2 grand, plus 615GBP of fettling.

On the other hand, they got a 1997 Diversion for 2 grand, no fettling
    required.

    That's expensive.
That's ludicrous. Any bike could cost a lot of money to put right, if
they gave it to a main dealer and paid top whack for everything.
Shopping about and doing work yourself brings prices down.
Again, expensive. They weren't picking typical bikes. I would assume
they went out of their way to find rough ones that were heavily
    overpriced.
That depends on whether it was a 600 or 900. It would be a bit pricey
    for a 600, but about right for a 900.

I doubt it. If they had done that the article would only have mentioned
    cruisers.

Yes they are and some of them actually get ridden to prove it.
