tempted to buy a highly expensive down jacket to see if it make a
winter 1hr20min motorway commute any more fun.. opinions please ! an
alternative to heated clothing ?( PS. I probably can't resist buying
    it now, all excited.. )

Go to somewhere like Snow & Rock and get some proper layers to wear
under the bike clothes. Then you'll have stuff that will be of use
during more parts of the year than a single purpose jacket.

If it gets wet, you're fucked. Synthetic is a much better option where
weight and packing volume isn't a priority (e.g. on a motorbike).

I'd get a windstopper fleece if I were you, or if your outer jacket is
    already windproof, one of these

    Montane stuff is excellent

This looks like good stuff with less hype than North Face . I have shed
loads of fleeces, mid layers etc. what ever I wear on the bike wants to
fit under the Rukka goretex though. Hmm.. montane do a down jacket too,
I'm thinking a down jacket would never need washing anyway since I wont
really sweat much on the bike ! he he.. money to burn me !

It gets *seriously* pleasant. And I use heated grips in June.......

I've not tried. Just don't need them with everything else. In fact the
Klan jacket liner is *also* one of the best bits of clothing in terms of
thermal under jacket things I've tried. I've only needed to use it
    turned on once......

There is no need for this, just wear more layers, even an extra t-shirt will
make a difference or an old jumper. The main thing is not to let the wind
    in.

    <confused>

So you'd rather spend a lot of money on an experiment that will leave
you sweating like a pig on any 'in town' parts of your journed (or when
    filtering through a crash-blocked motorway), than 120 quid on a known &
    proven item with a thermostat?

Just buy a heated waistcoat ffs.

ITYF it's the OP who is confused.

    This:

Really doesn't gel with, for example, this:
He's a pillock. All he wants is to be a bit flash and is looking for
    some reinforcement/approval. **** 'im.

I've got a down jacket and I wouldn't wear it on a bike no matter what
I was wearing over the top.

You'll sweat like a bastard and the sweat has to go out through the
down which leaves it sopping wet. They're shit for anything active and
even the ones with a goretex outer shell suffer in the same way. I
used to shove mine into a rucksack when I was winter climbing and only
drag it out when I was belaying or having a smoke break.

I thought the gerbings seemed expensive for what you get.. which it
seems they are compared to these ones.
