Not even that much, if you spend wisely. For my system (and it is quite
quick, keeping up with similar systems at a lot more of the price) I chose
an ASRock K7S8X 3.0 motherboard (around £25 at most computer fairs or scan
computers in Bolton. So far, amazingly stable and has more than enough
features for me), AMD XP2500 retail (at the time £65. bit cheaper nowadays I
believe). Luckily I bought the RAM at a low-point in its pricing (£30-odd
    for 512Mb PC3200) and a 120GB HDD for £60.

Being perma-skint for most of my life I took a lot of time deciding what to
get with my money when I came to upgrade, and I honestly feel I couldn`t
have done better for the price. Also, as Ginge seems to do, I went for the
"less than bleeding edge" components. A lot more bang per buck, as they say.

The only way I could improve my system in a noticable way now would be to go
down the Athlon 64 path, and that is far to expensive for the small gains I
would probably see at the moment. Maybe next year, when the pricing has
    settled somewhat.

Bear in mind the AMD Barton 2500+ is quite a clockable chip. Mine runs at
3200+ speeds with standard voltage. Set the board at 200Mhz FSB and away I
went. YMMV, of course, but 2800+ ( as it seems Ginge has his at) appears to
be attainable for all of them from what I`ve read.

Is the card actually fried, or just the fan? Replacement fans are available
at any Maplins electronics store (Thermaltake G4-VGA copper). £12 I think
mine cost when the fan died on my Ti4200. I since repaired my old fan
(clogged up with shite) and it`s working quite happily again, although I`m
sticking with the Thermaltake as it allows me to overclock the card that bit
    more.
If my old fan is any use, email an address and I`ll pop it in the post.

I figured that, and know both of you would see it here. Naturally Pip
gets to rape and pillage until he's sorted.

If at the end ot the excersise there's a faster chip than a Celeron 466
left over (my board will take both slot and socketed chips) it'd be very
useful to me... if not, no worries.

Well, it lives atm. Actually, it looks much like an atm.

The smallest HDD was dead. The graphics cars cooling fan fluffed up,
overheated and died, frying the GPU. The power supply was as fluffy as
****, and vacuuming the fluff away caused a couple of resistors to
spend their brief moment of freedom in the cleaner tube on their way
to the bag. The CDR appears to be dead too, Dave.

Now running on empty, a borrowed PSU and graphics card. Life Jim, but
not as we knew it. Ho hum.

  12. I remember being absolutely terrified by playing the AliensTC wad on

You know how much humour is based on the misfortunes of others?

I found that funny as ****. Having much the same chain of disaster
happen to me a couple of years ago, it's a relief to see it happen to
    someone else.

Schadenfreude, innit. Delight in the misfortunes of others. You
might as well, 'cos they'll sure as **** point and laugh at you when
    you fall on your snout.
I be pleased, Lord Curmudgeon, to be of some small amusement. What
got me was the way that it held on, by a cobweb as it were. Any of
the items above should have been sufficient to screw it pretty deeply,
but it took the graphics card to beep its last before all the rest of
    it gave up the ghost.

A mate lent me his freshly purchased copy to see if it's worth me buying
it. Current PC spec is Athlon XP1800 (actual cpu speed just over 1500
MHz), 1 Gig RAM, ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB graphics card.

I have a lot of money to spend if I want to play Doom 3.

That's most decent of you Mr. Z, but it is still running, at least for
the forseeable, TYVM. A new mobo, CPU, RAM, and CDRom lurk in the
future - I'm currently rattling the online parts suppliers bargain
bins for last year's models ;-)
